Unveiling the Poetry of Carilda Oliver || Review [Eng/Esp]

If I were ever asked which poet I would want to be for a day, I would undoubtedly say Carilda Oliver Labra. If I were ever asked for the name of the poem I wish I had written, it would be Eve's Speech; and if someone demanded that I tell them which published book I wish I had written, I would shout Naked and Forever.

Yes indeed, my friends from #hivebookclub, I keep this Cuban poetess on an altar, or rather, on my bedside table, so that her verses fly to me when I am lost, so that they unstitch my soul when it is badly sewn, so that they remind me how much passion existence can hold.

This notebook I urge you to read was an experiment based on combining literature with the visual arts, by a publisher as small as the one in my city. The book project seemed like an almost unattainable dream in a country with a publishing industry facing serious logistical problems. But sometimes the magic of a powerful verse multiplies in a universe that needs works like this.

A little over a hundred years ago, Carilda Oliver was born in Cuba, and although she was the heir to a deep cultural tradition, her voice emerged in a unique and transgressive way. She did not care about being a woman in a time full of restrictions and dared to speak openly about female desire. This woman, with a frankness that was simultaneously an act of liberation and rebellion, is the canon for many of us who dare to enter the jaws of poetry, like me.

When we think of Carilda, the first thing that comes to mind is her raw eroticism and her tangible concept of love. Perhaps that is why this book was created when it was decided to celebrate this diva of poetry with the pictorial work of the also Camagรผeyan visual artist Robert Pons.

This is much more than a poetry notebook; it is also a manifest album of sensuality in art. Full of legs, female silhouettes, fleshy lips, and genuinely ambiguous images, this book elevates us to a higher level of sensitivity.

Come with your nape of an unfaithful one,
with your stone throw.
Swear to me that I am not dead.
I promise you, my love, the apple.

There are verses that do not ask for permission, that are the image of this poetess and her total surrender. These verses can be consumed, savored, and transformed into dreams and desires. In every stanza, Carilda claims a woman's right to feel pleasure and express it out loud, and what makes her most authentic is that everything she said in her lyrics, she carried out in her life. Her passionate history, faithful to her doctrine of love, is known and admired by all her compatriots and admirers.

If you are looking for a female voice that overshadows the sadness of heartbreak, there is this woman who, in the face of the misfortune of a frustrated love, does not retreat into gentle weeping; she rebels, demands, and suffers with the same vehemence with which she once loved.

When are you going to come?
I am in a hurry to play at nothing,
to tell you "my love"
and let the thunder humiliate us
and the oranges grow pale in your hand.

When I read her, I feel how I connect with the most alive and urgent part of myself, and I remember that loving is also an act of courage, like a battle or a party. She reminds me that love, in all its glory and disaster, is the stuff we are made of.

Today I carry this notebook in my bag; perhaps I need a transfusion of feelings without permission, without restraints, in full abundance.
