Spring for me, down in the southern Hemisphere, has always been about football finals. All winter long we would train and play home and away games all over Brisbane, just hoping to win more than we lost. I would play in an over 45s masters competition and my son in a junior team I helped out with. We were lucky enough to play quite a few finals match's and twice over a number of years our little local junior club went all the way winning a flag.

They were pretty stressful times during the lead in having my son in a team where I was part of the coaching group but the feeling afterwards so something pretty special. Back at our little club house afterwards for pizza, soft drinks and celebrations. I thought I was a bit weird but I even watched the game again with my son on video the next morning while eating cold pizza. It was interesting to watch the game in a more relaxed fashion all ready knowing the out come while I was not concentrating on my roll for the game. I had to laugh when I caught up with some of the other Dads who said they did the same thing.

Neither my son or I play any more but I start to feel the nerves start to creep in, this time of year, every time I see or hear of the looming football finals, especially when our towns biggest team has just made the deciding game of this season. It looks like another exciting game will be on this weekend and even though the Brisbane Lions are probably not favorites to win they still have a chance.

It is interesting that my main memories of this time of year is about sport when I should be more focused on cleaning the pool ready for summer and planting a few seeds in the ground.
