Nuptial Dance.

The last time I danced was about 10 years ago, and that was on my wedding day. I remember how the MC made fun of me. He said that my wife was a better dancer. He also said that my waist was too stiff and many other things that I can't actually remember. However, I believed that all he said was true. I've never been a good dancer. From childhood whenever occasions for children to dance came up, I would run and hide myself. I remember vividly the inter-house sports competition in my primary school. I don't know what came over our house master that he selected me to represent the blue house in a dance competition. Had it meant I had my way, I would have run home that day, but I summoned courage, and our house took the last position.
Dancing requires some skills; however, some of these skills can be learnt, but I think that some come naturally. If not, what can we say about little children who are good dancers from birth? Our neighbours' children were good dancers. They had the skill and you'd enjoy seeing them demonstrate their hands and legs and shaking their bodies.
My wife is a good dancer; she dances a lot at home, especially when her favourite music is played. One day she invited me to join her. I told her that I will spray her money instead.
If I were told that a day like this would happen again in my life, I wouldn't have believed it. We were seated at a round table, each couple had their own table. It was a relationship concert hosted by one of the relationship coaches in the city. Her program has helped revive relationships and family lives, hence each year, a good number of attendees keep increasing.
I had no plan to attend an event such as this after all, my relationship with my wife is still very active. “Just a little misunderstanding that doesn't last a day is not enough to attend a relationship seminar” I told my wife when she insisted that we must attend the seminar. “Whether you like it, or not we must attend the seminar” she said
“I hope there will be no session of nuptial dance”? I asked. “None at all” she assured. It's very disappointing that my phobia of dance followed me into adulthood. I thought.
It was an interesting event, I enjoyed every session with different resource persons speaking on different topics, all towards ensuring a peaceful and blissful home. I had already whispered to my wife that we would not miss out on the next episode. She smiled and held my hands. This decision had a sudden turnaround when another resource person took over the podium and announced.
“This time, ladies and gentlemen, is for all the couples in the house to show their dancing skills.” The word hit me like a bullet. I was quiet for a moment, my face changed, and suddenly my wife began to laugh. I knew that she wasn't telling the truth when she told me that there wouldn't be a dance session. Now I have come face-to-face with my fears.
What will I do in this case? The thought came through, maybe I should excuse myself to the restroom. I reasoned that my wife might stop me, and it would appear very odd if she danced alone. I held my peace for a moment even though my heart was beating fast as if it would fall out of its socket.
“Baby, are you ready”? My wife asked, smiling beautifully. I married a beautiful wife, the thought crossed my mind.
The music began to play in the background and everyone in the room danced to the tune. I looked around and all the men were having a good time with their wives. None were ashamed to shake their bodies. I turned to stare at my wife, she was already in the mode, she held my hands and drew me to herself, took my hands across her waist area and left it there. She took a step, and I followed. We were gummed together, taking the same dance steps.
Suddenly, a voice spoke from the mic “The best dancers will go home with a prize”
“We can do it, baby”, my wife whispered to my ear. At this point, I was gaining confidence, I let go of her and innovated a new dance, and as the music went wild, I was already carried away by the ecstasy of the Afrobeat.
The music stopped suddenly and everyone was clapping. I came back to consciousness and I realised I was surrounded by a crowd of people. “What's going on here”? I thought.
“The best dancer award goes to Mr. And Mrs. Ajomobi Michael” the voice said. Everyone cheered coming close to hug us.
At the end, we were given a sum of 500k. It was a successful event. Before we got home, we had already booked for the next episode of the event.
