I believe every culture has something that binds it people together, so for the ijebu people, they have many traditions they perform and follow across all ijebu axis, one if those traditions is Agemo Festival. This Tradition is more than yearly event, it is a gathering that carries deep meaning, unity and identity. And this is a tradition ijebu people has been doing for years now, a tradition ijebu people started since they've become ijebu.
I was born and brought up in ijebu, back then when i was growing up, i always heard stories about how lively ijebu ode become every July of every year. The atmosphere used to change completely once it's Agemo period, drum echo, chants fill the air, and thr presence of the Agemo masquerades add a spiritual weight to the city. For me , it was more than entertainment, it's always a reminder that our culture is alive and breathing. Agemo period is always special. And ijebu use 7 days to do this tradition in every July of the year.
Agemo is a yearly ritual celebrated by the ijebu people, and like i said earlier,it usually happens around July. Different Agemo masquerades come out to do their ritual and each represent a particular deity, and they all converge in ijedu ode to do the ritual for seven days. Ijebu People believe so much in this Agemo festive period and people see this as a way of connecting to the spiritual world, asking for protection, peace, and blessings. It's really beyond it's religious side, this period is also a time of joy, that every body rejoice and celebrate, it's an opportunity for reunion, the moment for meeting long time friends and families and it's also a cultural pride. During this period, family gather, trader sells, and everyone has role to play.
Personally, what i actually like and admire about Agemo tradition ishow it's reinforces unity among ijebu's. Despite the differences, during this festival or period, everyone come together under one cultual umbrella. This culture also teaches us respect for the heritage, and even remind us not to forget where we are coming from. Even though things has really changed now compare to how it was back then. But today things has been modernized strongly, the Agemo remain a strong symbol of ijebu identity.
Today, whenever i think of it all, how things used to be back then, i think it as a cultural treasure that keep reminding us of the richest of our the history.But just like every tradition, it always hold a lesson; never lose touch with the root that shape you. So this is my few and honest take on Agemo and it isn't just about masquerades and rituals, but about unity, heritage and pride in who we are. I believe we learn new thing about this tradition because i know majority of us know nothing about this Agemo Festive celebration.
