As soon as they no longer look good enough to take to work or on informal outings,I must assign them to hold all kinds of objects and provisions that we women carry in Cuba. My fondness for these bags has reached such a point that I have included them in the options for my small business.I know that the theory from business gurus dictates that it is more effective to offer a product that the market requires, rather than being guided by our personal tastes. I convince myself that thereare customers, and I haven't been able to resist. If the business doesn't progress in that direction, I can supply the demand from myself, my daughters, and some friends.
In their student life, Sofía and Beatriz used backpacks for their books and other school supplies. And, from little girls to teenagers, their accessories included small handbags, but later they have copied this accessory of mine. The best marketing so far has been my daughters.In Sofía's classroom, some girls are already requesting a customized tote. So far, I order them from a seamstress who enjoys the commission and acknowledges that it is simple.
And then, if the image isn't very complicated, my husband and I paint them by hand. I have also tried the sublimation technique, but on this type of canvas it's not the most effective. The recommended one is screen printing. And that is where I will head in my future efforts. Not all of us prefer tote bags to complete an outfit.And that's because they inherently communicate a casual, informal, and natural style that isn't liked by 100 percent of us.
I am convinced that canvas bags ensure, as an auxiliary piece, greater care for the expensive, structured handbags that dominate the rules of elegance. Furthermore, the sustainability of the materials used is a point in their favor. They are very much in demand in the city during summer,also for the gym and for going to the beach. However, I have been able to observe that their versatility has gradually turned them into a timeless piece. Although in large cities,like Havana and Santa Clara, this fashion is much more visible, little by little it has crept in among university students in the rest of the country due to its versatility. And it is by no means a Cuban invention, but rather present all over the world.
History references the first version of the popular tote bag we know in 1944. An American seller created them to carry ice. So from their origin, they were destined to withstand heavy weight. And he conceived it from robust and resistant canvas. Lately,I have been busy preparing two orders for classmates of Sofía and Beatriz. It has become one of the activities I enjoy the most.

Estas ideas que les comparto van más allá del uso de las tote bags como una prenda de moda. Mis hijas y yo amamos las tote bags, esos bolsos de lienzo, sencillos, espaciosos y funcionales que nos sirven para casi todo momento del día a día. Esta costumbre no es casual. Me han visto desde siempre usarlos, sustituyendo uno por otro, pero siempre permanente en mis accesorios, compartiendo lugar con otras carteras más formales.
El lienzo usualmente muestra mensajes grabados que me identifican o no tanto, porque han sido regalos o compras un poco impulsivas. Pero a Sofía y a Beatriz, mis jovencitas, sí les gusta que se adornen con frases o imágenes que ellas defienden. Tan pronto ya no lucen bien para llevarlos al trabajo o salidas informales, debo destinarlos a guardar todo tipo de objetos y provisiones que cargamos las mujeres en Cuba. A tal punto ha sido mi gusto por estos bolsos que los tengo incluidos en las opciones de mi emprendimiento. Ya sé que la teoría de los gurús de los negocios dicta que es más eficaz ofertar un producto que requiera el mercado, que guiarnos por nuestros gustos personales. Yo me convenzo de que sí hay clientes y no he podido sustraerme. Si el negocio no avanza en esa dirección puedo suplir la demanda mía, de mis hijas y algunas amigas.
En su vida estudiantil Sofía y Beatriz, empleaban las mochilas para sus libros y otros útiles escolares. Y, de niñas a adolescentes sus accesorios incluían pequeñas carteras, pero luego han copiado ese complemento mío. El mejor marketing hasta ahora han sido mis hijas. En el aula de Sofía ya algunas muchachas solicitan una tote personalizada. Hasta ahora las encargo a una costurera que disfruta la encomienda y reconoce que es sencilla.
Y, luego, si la imagen no es muy complicada, mi esposo y yo las pintamos a mano. También he intentado la técnica de sublimación, pero en este tipo de lienzo no es la más eficaz. La recomendada es la serigrafía. Y hacia allá me dirigiré en mi empeño futuro. No todas preferimos las tote bags para completar un outfit. Y es que de por sí comunican un estilo desenfadado, informal y natural que no gusta al 100 por ciento de nosotras.
Estoy convencida de que los bolsos de lienzo garantizan, a modo de pieza auxiliar, mayor cuidado a las carteras caras y estructuradas que dominan las reglas de la elegancia. Además, es un punto a favor la sostenibilidad de los materiales que se usan. Resulta muy solicitada en verano en la ciudad, también para el gym y para ir a la playa. No obstante, he podido advertir que su versatilidad las ha convertido poco a poco en pieza atemporal. Aunque en las ciudades grandes, como La Habana y Santa Clara, esta moda es mucho más visible, poco a poco entre las universitarias del resto del país se ha colado por su versatilidad. Y no es ni por asomo un invento cubano, sino presente en el mundo entero.
