Yesterday, I went out with a friend to get stuff and during the time we were together, we spoke about a lot of things. We were joking about something and all of a sudden this friend of mine tells me I have acne on my face. And I’m like ‘and so?’. I further went on to tell them that if they’re trying to bodyshame me it’s not going to work. Because when I was leaving the house I saw my face, and I know I have acne, and I’m proud of it.
God Himself created us in his own imagine and this should tell us that our bodies have been created perfectly. What others think shouldn’t really matter to us because at the end of the day, what are those people going to do for you. If you can give me money to visit Turkey or Dubai to work on my body, that’s the only time you’d get to comment on it but if you don’t, move to the side, please.
This generation of ours is very fond of trying to shame others or criticize them on how they look. I’ve seen instances online where people come out to say they are ugly and others also back that claim. I’ve also seen instances where people leave hate comments on others posts just because of how they look. You wouldn’t think you’re causing harm to the other party and if only you know the level of emotional damage you were putting them through, you would never leave hate comments under their posts.
I am very confident in myself and who I am and what my body looks like. I take very good care of myself and so it just makes sense that I wouldn’t allow anyone to try to shame me because of acne. There was I time I didn’t have acne, but now, I do. That doesn’t change who I am or what I stand for. Not everyone has this level of self consciousness. I have a friend who is very beautiful, dark skin, nice body and thick lips. But she always tells me no one cares about her because she’s ugly. She kept repeating it all the time until one day I came out at her and told her to drop the low mindset and she’s whoever and whatever she thinks she is. They say what a man thinketh is who he is and it’s very true.
Body positivity should be something that should be promoted in our current generation because it not being promoted is putting a lot of people in bad places. I’d say the only time body positivity can get toxic is when your idea of body positivity is causing others to feel less and are forced to go in for surgeries and other drugs which will harm them. There was an issue in Ghana a few years ago when the celebrity was arrested for selling fake body slimming tea to people at exorbitant prices when she went out to turkey to perform surgeries for a coca-cola body. The tea she was selling wasn’t working but then imagine she projected of her body and what people saw made them purchase her tea. This isn’t right and I think she served time for it.
Everyone is unique in his own way. Let’s learn to be proud of who we are. Because nothing you do is going to change it. What really matters is your heart.
