Welcome to a new series on collecting records and sampling.

I can remember back in the nineties when volume 1 came out, because I had a copy on cassette. I think I wore it out after listening to it too much, I was therefore truly excited to find the second volume in Pop Classics today.

As I purchased the record, the owner said he had volume 1 but had sold it two days prior, otherwise I would have bought that one too!

£20 is about the going rate for second hand records, especially considering this is a double, that’s not too bad. I did spot some selling at £35, £50 or higher for some very rare items. You can buy brand new records in his shop too, all of the bands these days are returning to selling vinyl and proper merchandise. You have to in order to make a living, lets not talk about Spotify.

I am going to compile some of my own music onto a vinyl record soon because I can do that now. Soundcloud have started to offer this.

Sampling from vinyl

I tend to use the Roland SP404 mk2 but have in the past used MPCs, no longer have any of those but considering getting the latest one Akai have released next year, will sell some equipment that is gathering dust to help fund it.

Alternatively I use Koala and quite often use that in conjunction with the Roland.

Either sample an entire track or small sections. Often the former is best and then just slice it, refine the slices in order to grab drum hits or sections you wish to treat as chops.

Besides Vinyl there is…

Tracklib - I’ve been enjoying their site for awhile now and it’s an excellent source of music and is a samplists heaven. Some tracks will require clearance if you wish to use in music that you sell but you can process a lot of that through Tracklib.

You’ll find some that have already been cleared as part of your subscription.

Either way the site is an alternative to visiting record stores.

My profile is https://www.tracklib.com/users/nickeblewis and you can see all of the stuff I’ve collected on there and at some point I will polish off the profile a little bit more.
