Do We Really Need More Holidays?

Breaking off from the usual hustle and bustle of life is always exciting, you know. I love the sound of holiday; I guess you do too; most people do. There is a kind of relief that holidays bring. No matter how much of a workaholic I can be, I embrace holidays to relax, rest, sleep longer, and recharge better, and of course for better productivity. ![20250924_212855_0000.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/nkemakonam89/23tvc1KFxnZjjzQ2fbCQVSZDaUL1o2595HXyDcebfaUQN2NjyJ52WrjLqKBvPuW9R2Pvx.png) ***** The need to pause and take some breaks from the stress that work subjects us to cannot be overstated; that's how important holidays are to me. But then this prompt asks whether we really need more holidays, looking at my country's calendar and the holidays already attached, and if too much of it can affect our economy. ***** When I was still a teenager, I used to count holidays like no man's business. The excitement to disconnect from rushing to school but rather stay at home and maybe travel for the Christmas holiday to connect with extended families is heavenly. Even now as a mother, I still feel good whenever a holiday is coming. That means no early morning sleep deprivation and no morning rush to get the kids ready for school. Even the kids are happy because Mum wouldn't be waking them up early to get ready. ![20250924_213155_0000.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/nkemakonam89/23yTmAwZ2SVhCFgnHZkHG6rHYnBypbw2hWvznEfdfEX55Yybpox99Z3L2EUWhVSFKYxji.png) ***** I mean, who doesn't love holidays? Who would prefer to be stretched out even if money is involved? The time I did a civil servant job, I craved the weekend daily. The kind of stress I passed through on Lagos Road each day makes me sick. At 4 am, I am up, and by 5 am, I am already at the bus stop struggling to get a bus to work and go early to avoid a query, then return home at 9-10 pm. Life is too stressful, but we keep doing all of these to make ends meet. I guess everyone, both workers and students, loves the idea of a holiday. ***** Here in my country, there are Sallah holidays, Christmas, New Year, Easter holidays, Independence Day, and a few others. I guess these are already enough, and they are spread in a way that it looks balanced; adding extra may not look good. I can't explain better how it can affect the economy, but I once listened to the news at 10 in the past about why the country's economy might be at more risk if everything is shut down for a while, just like during the time of COVID with many days of curfew in the country. Yeah, business owners lose money when holidays become too much. Even without analyzing it economically, it's obvious that productivity will be low, and that's not healthy for the economy, I guess. ![20250924_212745_0000.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/nkemakonam89/24242DsegNrj49ajQGwBivfK1wiGWW9u9DCmxNhjctGWxUaa5zAR8vpSCQ5YtYLoEaqWQ.png) ***** Wrapping up, I would say that for the holidays already in place, anyone can utilize them to rest, bond with families, travel, and catch up with other important things. There is no need for extra, but if you think you need more personally, try having breaks in between your work each day...at least to get refreshed without feeling overwhelmed, and then make use of the fixed holidays for bonding, travelling and others. That way, things might look balanced again. *This post is in response to the #Hive Learners community contest on the topic titled*, **HOLIDAY SEASON** ***Images were taken from canva***
