Why I Believe Degrees Still Hold Value Despite the Shift

It's so clear that our world today is changing fast. Every now and then, there are new innovations that keep reshaping our society and, in turn, question if getting degrees is still worth it in our changing world of nowadays. Due to how many things have been unfolding in 2025, some people have argued that degrees seem not relevant to pursue anymore, seeing that most people are making it big through skills, through their creativity, through opportunities in social media, and the rest. Some people question the need to still put in a lot of money, energy, and resources in pursuing degrees, whereas what you know this day can make you big financially and not what type of degree you have secured from school. ![20250910_114747_0000.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/nkemakonam89/23zbPRm8GdtAum2f3ub8hArBa7k1ufg2zHXfjbMMTPHbCewocdJq9S5VU833sUj8BKtiU.png) ***** Personally, I will say that getting degrees is still worth all the effort, especially in certain professions. I wouldn't deny that in our current world, it's all about what you know that can land you a good job with the way things are going, but let's say you have a complicated health issue now; would you allow someone who is not certified to handle your case? Simply because he or she acquired doctor skills through YouTube? Definitely not, right? You and I will be more comfortable with a doctor with a degree to attend to our medical needs. ***** On the other hand, for that court case you are undergoing, would you prefer to hire a lawyer who learned the skill online or the one with a degree to come and defend your land case? These two professions I mentioned above and more obviously need a degree no matter how our world keeps evolving; pursuing the degree is still worth it in my opinion. ***** However, there are many stories of people who never secured a degree but are doing beautifully well for themselves, simply because they diverted their energy to skills. The likes of tech gurus, even digital marketers, my fellow real estate consultants, crypto traders, and so on. Most of these people have no degree from any school, you know and they are doing well, so you see, there is a big shift in our world today. The big picture is no longer about the certificate we are pursuing but what we have to give out. ![20250910_115023_0000.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/nkemakonam89/23xAZqADL4AAt3tkVz1sFK6aFxqawbznXk96SDT9dGpqvbFWjJcP6pbG5NWd4Wto9qwRn.png) ***** One of the tech jobs I applied for last month just for testing oo lol—the white man mentioned that he doesn't need anyone's certificate in a CV, but simply state what you can do and you will be tested practically. Having said that, it will interest you to know that in my daily life activities, I apply what I learned in school, even if it's not on a big thing but in little things. Knowledge is power and can never be ruled out because our world is shifting. Even with the skills people are cashing out big, the basis of the success still lies on what we learned from school. Each day I am teaching my kids, I see myself passing down the knowledge I got from school those days. Even with my relationship with people, friends, market men and women, etc. ***** Overall, there's more to be done by the school system. It's not enough these days to focus on the theoretical aspect of studies alone and keep producing graduates who cannot defend themselves practically and survive in their changing society. I was listening to news last week about adjusting the curriculum to contain coding for all students. That's also good, but let schools have a serious combination of practical skills for the students. ![20250910_114818_0000.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/nkemakonam89/245HyrCCQ5wUZaAcMYw8voYzeoRuDYWLv1ttrURXYmFuQQeT3BGxTTmpe7sYQTouoD8sZ.png) ***** At the end, degrees are still worth it, but what you and I know is what will help us thrive in today's world. *This post is in response to the #Hive Learners community contest on the topic titled*, **Still Worth It**. ***Images were taken from canva***
