Good evening, blogging friends, here I am with the second part of my trip to Serravalle. You'll find the first part on my blog. As I mentioned, Serravalle is a beautiful town with a charming medieval village. The crown jewel of this village is the Rocca (fortress). Towering over the entire town, the fortress is divided into two parts: the new, partially restored part and the old, unfortunately, in ruins. The fortress is surrounded by a large garden where various events, such as fairs and concerts, and even astronomy evenings, are held on summer weekends. It's a truly beautiful place that I always love to visit. The fortress is also known as Rocca di Castruccio, a famous Tuscan architect who built several bridges and fortresses, especially in the Pistoia area. It's a medieval fortress built around 1300.

The fortress was a defensive structure built to defend against Florence and Lucca. It was located in a strategic hilltop position overlooking the entire valley. It was equipped with tall watchtowers, which unfortunately cannot be visited today due to their precarious condition. The fortress was later taken by the Luccans, who used it to command the entire Valdinievole. For years, it was held by the Lucca government, which had the towers rebuilt using the limestone typical of the Lucca area. The fortress once consisted of towers, various stone gates, walkways, and a water cistern. Today, only one gate, parts of the walkways, and the towers remain. Unfortunately, it has deteriorated significantly over time, but it remains one of the most fascinating fortresses in the Pistoia area. If you are passionate about ancient fortresses and the Middle Ages, you absolutely must visit it!
