In life, everyone has a core value or a personal belief that shapes the way we act and the way we relate with others. These values go a long way in guiding our decisions. They are always at our fingertips, so before taking any action, we often ask ourselves if that action is worth taking. All of these are a result of our beliefs and the core values we have set for ourselves.

Personally, I have my own principles and values that have guided my dealings with people. However, ever since I joined the Rotary Club, the Four-Way Test of Rotary has reinforced my beliefs, shaped my core values, and become the yardstick I use in measuring my interactions with others. It has influenced my actions and inactions, helping me to make better decisions.

The Four-Way Test 1️⃣ Is it the truth? 2️⃣ Is it fair to all concerned? 3️⃣ Will it build goodwill and better friendship? 4️⃣ Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Is it the truth? We must always ask ourselves whether what we say or do is the truth. In business, for instance, some people inflate prices and end up deceiving their customers. At times, we are entrusted with responsibilities but misuse the opportunity for personal gain while lying to the beneficiaries. The question remains, is it the truth?

Is it fair to all concerned? Every action or inaction should be weighed against fairness. When something is entrusted to us to share, do we share it equally or do we favour some people over others simply because of personal relationships?

Will it build goodwill and better friendship? After our actions, we must ask whether they will strengthen or destroy relationships. Will people still speak well of us? Will our actions promote peace, trust, and mutual respect?

Will it be beneficial to all concerned? We should not act solely for our personal interest, our families, or those close to us. Instead, we should ensure that the outcome of our actions brings benefit to everyone concerned.

As we wind down the week, let us allow the Rotary Four-Way Test to serve as our guiding principle and our yardstick in measuring our dealings with others. Let us take a moment to reflect on the Four-Way Test before taking any action.
