Hello there, Hive Community, Hello and welcome to my first post. First things first, I want to thank my dear friend @samostically and my amazing sister @ajumaa for being supportive and for introducing me to this fantastic site. I am new to things like this, but I am certain that this is a fantastic chance for me to learn new skills, display my creativity, and meet and connect with incredible individuals in the Hive community.
MEET ME
My name is Ojonugwa, Nugwa for short. I am a final year student in college and and my major is Human Anatomy. I am mostly finished with academic activity, yet I still consider myself a student due to the current ASUU(Academic Staff Union of Universities) strike. But, happily, it has been called off, and I will soon be a graduate after I complete the final clearance. Human Anatomy was not an easy course to study, but through consistency, hard work, and devotion, I was able to make it through. Eventually, I want to go ahead and apply to study Medicine as it as always been my dream to a Medical Doctor,a Surgeon to be specific. I learned a lot at college and made wonderful friends and memories.
### MY CHESS STORY
I learnt about chess in 2011. My neighbor and friend at the time had a coach come over to teach him chess. My sister and I would always wonder what was going on there. Out of curiosity, we went there to watch and immediately developed an interest in the game. At first, my parents did not know what the game was and mistook it for checkers(drafts),thinking we were gambling, they would chase us. Until the coach explained to them what the game was all about. With our continual hovering and observing, the coach recognized our enthusiasm and offered to teach us the game as well as become our coach.
Fast forward a few years, we stopped playing for a while because we went off to boarding school for high school, we were not allowed to go out for tournaments. As a result of that,it slowed our performance in chess. When I got into the university, I joined the chess club there, where I eventually became the captain of the female chess team. I was able to boost my playing strategies and performance, by playing various tournaments but the most recent one was NUGA(National Universities Games) in March 2022, where my sister and I represented the school. I finished triumphantly, with a perfect 9/9 on my board, winning a gold medal for myself and the school. I wish to improve my chess skills significantly and someday represent the Nigerian Federation.
During the ASUU strike break, I grew interested in a variety of things. One example is fish processing; I am not really new to this industry because my mother is an expert in it. I learned how to degut a fish, fold it, and place it in the smoking kiln for processing and packaging. I'd want to turn this into a business venture.
Tailoring is the second interest I discovered. In August, I began studying tailoring. It was challenging for me at first to use the manual sewing machine. My boss showed me how to sketch and cut out a basic body pattern. My first assignment was to cut and sew a baby's dress using pattern sheets and hand needle and thread on my own. It was nerve-racking, but I was able to do that successfully.
After weeks of learning how to use the manual sewing machine, I got a hang of it. I learnt how to draw patterns of more outfits. I made two skirts, one for myself and one for my younger sister, as well as a peplum top.
I was still working on honing my sewing skills when the flood hit and flooded the roads, so I stopped attending classes. I'm hoping to go back to it as soon as feasible, and also someday start designing and sewing outfits for myself, my mother, and my sisters eventually. And also turn it to a business venture.
SUMMARY
It is my hope that my interest in chess, fashion designing, and business will help me become a better Doctor as chess is a game that develops your critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, fashion has helped me develop my eye-hand coordination which I will need in my practice as a Surgeon and finally my interest in business will also help me manage my medical practice in the future.
I'm looking forward to meeting a lot of people who share my interest in fashion designing, Chess, Business and Medicine in this community, and developing a mutually benefitting relationships with them in our common areas of interest.
