Advice To Newly Graduated Students

School is a bitter-sweet place to be in. We meet good people there as well as bad people. As one of the three major agents of socializations, it shapes an individual through peer and non-peer influence into what they decide to be. Quite an interesting place to be in.

University is a double edged sword. It can make an individual grow and it can equally make them fall. This all depends on steps and decisions the individual in question takes and makes. This post is a prompt entry for India United Community [contest](https://peakd.com/hive-197685/@indiaunited/indiaunited-new-contest-and-last-058a3b7027daf), titled "What Advice Would You Give to Someone Leaving School Today?" Though not very experienced with life, in this post, i will share a few advice to newly graduated college students. I have not been to other countries to know how things are there, so, my advice will be from a Nigerian perspective. Here goes.. Most students think that graduating from college means that life will automatically get better and they will get jobs in no time. Based on this, some people will focus solely on the course they study, forgetting the fact that they are in a country where getting a job is mostly based on connections. If a student don't have a skill before they graduate, i highly recommend that they get a lucrative skill. They can have any skill at all, be it hair styling, fashion designing or anything of choice. Let the skill generate enough income for self up keep.

When learning a skill, they should actively look for a job. The reason why i advice people to learn a skill is because, like I said earlier, getting a job in my country can be very hard. So, before getting a job based on the field they study in school, the newly graduated person can be getting some funds from their skills to take care of themselves. I will not advice newly graduated people to have high expectations when it comes to getting a job. I have seen people that studied public health in school, but with connections, they are working as bankers in banks. Its not about what you studied, but about how large your connection is, so, if possible try as much as possible to get these connections while in school, or after graduating. Unlike in school where people can be rough and cocky, real life is totally different as the law is ready to back a person or punish an offender. Thank you for reading.
