Norway's Independence Day 🇳🇴

Yesterday, May 17th, Norway celebrated Syttende Mai, its Constitution Day, kind of like Independence Day in many countries. Being Swedish, I wanted to share my reflection on the significance of this day for Norway and Sweden both.

The day honors the 1814 constitution signed at Eidsvoll, marking Norway’s step toward autonomy after Danish rule. Watching clips of Oslo’s parades on YouTube yesterday (and remembering similar scenes with Norwegians celebrating this day in Sweden) with people out on the streets and squares, waving flags 🇳🇴, I felt something stir in me and decided to dedicate today's post to it.

The union’s end in 1905 was a turning point, but so was the war of 1812–1814, Sweden’s last military conflict. After aiding the coalition against Napoleon, Sweden gained Norway but also embarked on over two centuries of peace, a rare feat in global history. This peace has been transformative for Sweden, fostering stability, economic growth, and a welfare state that’s a global model. It’s allowed Sweden to focus inward — building infrastructure, education, and innovation — while avoiding the devastation of wars that scarred others. This legacy and value of long-lasting peace with neighbours makes me deeply grateful as a citizen of Sweden 🇸🇪.

Our relationship with Norway today is an example to others, shaped by history. In the 19th century, Sweden dominated the union, our king guiding foreign policy. Norway’s peaceful push for independence in 1905 taught us mutual respect. Now, open borders, shared environmental goals, and playful sports rivalries (those skiing and hockey clashes! ⛷️) reflect equality. Still, I wonder if we Swedes fully appreciate the frustrations Norwegians once endured under our influence.

Norway’s 1814 constitution, grounded in Enlightenment ideals, balanced monarchy and democracy, showing resilience even under Swedish sway. The 1905 dissolution benefited both, nudging Sweden toward collaboration. Reflecting on our peace since 1814, I see it as a foundation for our progress, letting us channel energy into society rather than conflict. Yesterday’s festivities proved independence is about community, not isolation. As a Swedish citizen, I’m proud of Norway’s path as an independent nation. And to our Nordic neighbors: Gratulerer med dagen! 🥂
