Good day, people of Hive! Welcome to my blog. Today’s topic is from Hive Student Connect, and it says: **Peer Pressure.** So, let’s dive in.
Peer pressure is something that many young people struggle with, especially in school, but sincerely, I have never been a victim of it, and that is because of the kind of home I come from. I was raised in a Christian home by my parents and my late grandma, and they taught us from a young age that peer pressure is not good and that we should always be content with what we have or what they give us. Growing up with those teachings has helped not only me but my siblings as well.

Even now that I am in the university, which is one of the easiest places to be pressured, I have never been pressured to do anything bad. In fact, God blessed me with amazing friends who don’t push me into negative things. The only time they will pressure me is when I am feeling too lazy to read; they will force me to read, whether it’s on a normal day, during tests, or exam periods. And that kind of pressure is good because it is for my own benefit and future.
But I have seen a lot of people around me who fall victim to peer pressure because they want to belong or feel among. Some dress in ways that do not suit them, just to look like their friends. There was this girl who is very close to my brother and always comes to greet him. Through my brother, we got to know her more. One day, she came to our house, called her parents, and lied to them that they were asked to pay #20,000 in school, just because she wanted to buy the same clothes and shoes her friends were buying. When my brother found out, he talked to her and advised her to stop mingling with those friends because they would lead her astray and would not help her in the end. Instead of listening, she got offended and said my brother had too many problems and stopped coming to our place. Later on, we got to know she got pregnant.

Another case was a guy from my department. His friends were into Yahoo, and we all know what they do. He and his friends would skip classes, and the only time we would see them was during tests and exams. After that, they would disappear again. Because he wanted to belong, anytime his parents sent him his school fees, which was #104,000, he would use it to bet and buy clothes, starting from our 200-level first semester. Later, I don’t know how his parents found out that he was not paying his school fees. They had to come to school on the last day of our 300-level first semester exam to report him to our level coordinator. Because he had been skipping classes, it affected him academically.
From all these things I have seen, I just thank God for my own life. I know the kind of home I come from, and I know the values and teachings my dad and elder sisters have instilled in me and my brother. Like I said, my siblings and I were taught to always be content and not compare ourselves with others. That is why I don’t feel pressured at all. I don’t act or dress to impress anybody, and I don’t follow what others are doing.
I am honestly proud of myself that I have never allowed peer pressure to control or affect me. My friends don’t influence me negatively; instead, they push me to be better, especially in my academics.
In conclusion, peer pressure is not a good thing. If I have to give advice to anyone facing peer pressure, I will say they should know who they are and where they are coming from (their family), and always be content with what they have or are given.
