‎ ‎The intimacy of sexual pleasure should produce a fun moment for both parties, but when pain is produced instead of pleasure, it means something is wrong. The unfortunate thing about this happening is that those who experience it are often too embarrassed to speak about it, and this condition is one that needs to be spoken about to a medical expert who can render help. ‎

‎ ‎The condition is called dyspareunia; it is the persistent and recurring pain that happens just before, during, or after sexual intercourse. Even if the condition is more common amongst women, it can happen to the male gender as well. The pain can be felt by women either internally or externally: internally in areas like the uterus, skin of the vaginal canal, lower abdomen, pelvic floor muscles, and the ligaments supporting the uterus, and externally in the vulva. ‎ ‎When men experience dyspareunia, it is usually felt on the head of their penis, the shaft, on the testicles, or in their pelvis. Apart from the pain this condition causes, it also creates a negative emotional and psychological impact on a couple's relationship, causing pain and strain. ‎ ‎Dyspareunia is classified based on the different locations they exist in. ‎ ‎Intraoital or superficial dyspareunia, also called entry pain, according to its name, is the pain felt at the entrance of the vagina during initial penetration. The causes of this type of pain are vaginal dryness, hormones, infection, injury, or chronic irritation. ‎ ‎Collision dyspareunia, also called deep pain, is the type of pain that happens with deep penetration; it may get worse with some sexual positions. This could also be a trigger resulting from some of the conditions that affect the bowel or bladder, pelvic congestion syndrome, endometriosis, or pelvic floor dysfunction. The pain can further be classified into either primary, secondary, complete, or situational types of pain. ‎

‎ ‎The primary pain is the one that has been in existence ever since the person became sexually active; secondary pain happens after some episodes of pain-free sex; complete pain is the one that comes up every time there is sexual intercourse; and situational pain is when the pain happens only a few times. ‎ ‎The condition is more common among women who have gone past menopause; this is usually because of the decrease in estrogen, a hormone that helps with lubrication and other areas of vaginal health. It is, however, wrong for us to assume vaginal health is as a result of age; that may not be the case sometimes. ‎ ‎The absence of sufficient vaginal lubrication seems to be the major cause of painful sex, but an infection, trauma, medical condition, or injury can also cause it. Let's briefly touch on some of the possible medical conditions that can cause dyspareunia. ‎ ‎Problems with the muscles and ligaments in the pelvic floor can cause a painful sexual experience, itchy skin disorders like dermatitis, endometriosis, and bowel discomfort. hormonal changes, bladder problems, nervous system issues, vaginismus, genitourinary syndrome of menopause, and vulvodynia. ‎ ‎And speaking of trauma, it can be caused by having sexual intercourse too soon after childbirth or surgery or injury in the vagina or vulva, which may be caused as a result of a tear or cut during delivery. Infection in the vagina includes yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, or sexually transmitted infections that include herpes, genital warts, or other forms of STIs. Getting the right solution for sex-related pain will be highly dependent on its underlying cause, and when the cause is not easily visible, a more extensive investigation will have to be carried out to reveal the major reason for the discomfort. ‎ ‎You can tell you have dyspareunia when you experience deep pain while thrusting, burning pain or aches, pain at penetration including when you put on a tampon, or throbbing pain that lasts for hours even after sex. Like other conditions, a visit to a medical expert can help clarify your diagnosis and offer the best treatment options that will help relieve your symptoms. ‎ ‎#### For Further Studies. ‎ ‎https://www.princetongyn.com/blog/causes-and-solutions-for-painful-intercourse ‎ ‎https://www.webmd.com/sexual-conditions/pain-during-intercourse-treatment ‎ ‎https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/painful-intercourse/symptoms-causes/syc-20375967 ‎ ‎https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/12325-dyspareunia-painful-intercourse ‎ ‎_ ‎ ‎_ ‎ ‎
