Días de encierro y preguntas al aire.

He pasado varios días en encierro, no porque así lo haya decidido, sino por las redadas de ICE. Imagínate esta vaina: entraste al país con permiso, con papeles en orden, y de la noche a la mañana las nuevas políticas hacen que hoy seas “legal” y mañana “ilegal”. Una locura, ¿no? La falta de actividad laboral me hace sentir extraño. Yo no soy de quedarme quieto: estar sin hacer nada me mata de aburrimiento. Pero entre leyes que salen, demandas que aparecen y decretos de jueces federales que cambian todo de un día a otro… uno se pregunta si este “país próspero” del que tanto se habla no está hundido, en realidad, en políticas que ahogan la vida del ciudadano común. Lo más triste es que a los uniformados, y hasta a los llamados cazarrecompensas, poco les importa el estatus legal de una persona. Conozco casos de gente con cita asignada para defender su asilo, que aun así fueron privados de libertad. La excusa es absurda: “preso, puede esperar su fecha de corte”. Y ahí me asalta la pregunta: ¿Por qué recibir un trato de criminal cuando la mayoría solo son padres y madres que buscan sacar adelante a su familia? ¿Por qué no usar las mismas energías en combatir a los verdaderos criminales que hacen de las suyas en las calles? ¿Será porque eso no resulta tan rentable para quienes han invertido en este gobierno? Estas dudas no son solo mías. Son preguntas que escucho a diario en la calle, de criollitos y de extranjeros. Al final, la gran incógnita es: ¿qué pasará mañana? Por ahora, solo me queda poner mi confianza en Dios —o como cada quien prefiera llamarlo— y esperar que algún día la balanza se incline hacia la justicia y la humanidad. I've spent several days in confinement, not by choice, but because of ICE raids. Imagine this: you entered the country with permission, with your papers in order, and overnight, new policies make you "legal" today and "illegal" tomorrow. Crazy, right? The lack of work makes me feel strange. I'm not one to stay still: doing nothing bores me to death. But between laws being passed, lawsuits being filed, and decrees from federal judges that change everything from one day to the next... one wonders if this "prosperous country" we hear so much about isn't actually mired in policies that suffocate the lives of ordinary citizens. The saddest thing is that the uniformed officers, and even the so-called bounty hunters, care little about a person's legal status. I know of cases of people with an appointment scheduled to defend their asylum, who were still deprived of their liberty. The excuse is absurd: "If you're in prison, you can wait for your court date." And then the question strikes me: Why be treated like criminals when the majority are just fathers and mothers trying to support their families? Why not use the same energy to fight the real criminals who are doing their thing on the streets? Could it be because that's not as profitable for those who have invested in this government? These doubts aren't just mine. They're questions I hear every day on the street, from locals and foreigners alike. In the end, the big question is: what will happen tomorrow? For now, all I can do is put my trust in God—or whatever you prefer to call Him—and hope that one day the scales will tip toward justice and humanity.
