Whenever I decide to travel within Portugal, there's a voice inside me that tells me to go beyond the obvious. It's not that I have anything against paradisiacal beaches or cocktails with umbrellas, but the truth is that I have a certain obsession with places that tell stories. The ones that don't shout, but whisper. And that's what led me to Tavira, a small town on the Algarve coast, living in a time of its own. A time where the stones speak and make us slip and the bells still mark the hours with some solemnity (at least until ten at night).

Sempre que decido viajar dentro de Portugal, há uma voz cá dentro que me diz para ir além do óbvio. Não é que eu tenha algo contra praias paradisíacas ou cocktails com guarda-chuvinha, mas a verdade é que tenho uma certa obsessão por lugares que contam histórias. Aquelas que não gritam, mas que sussurram. E foi isso que me levou até Tavira, uma pequena cidade na costa algarvia, que vive num tempo próprio. Um tempo onde as pedras falam e nos fazem escorregar e os sinos ainda marcam as horas com alguma solenidade (pelo menos até as dez da noite).
That day, the plan was clear: visit Tavira, yes, but with a very specific purpose. We went with the intention of learning more about its history, of seeing with my own eyes two places that had long been on my radar, Tavira Castle and the Santa Maria do Castelo Church. I took my camera (of course), unable to separate the curious gaze from the photographic gaze, and set out in search of images that conveyed more than simply beautiful landscapes.

Naquele dia, o plano era claro, vistar Tavira, sim, mas com um propósito bem definido. Fomos com a intenção de conhecer mais da sua história, de ver com os meus próprios olhos dois lugares que há muito estavam no meu radar, o Castelo de Tavira e a Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo. Levei a câmara, (claro), sou incapaz de separar o olhar curioso do olhar fotográfico, e segui em busca de imagens que dissessem mais do que simples paisagens bonitas.
Arriving at the castle was like entering a space between reality and imagination. It's not a fairytale castle, with tall towers, flags fluttering, and halls filled with tapestries. Nothing like that. The one in Tavira is more modest, more restrained. But there's something deeply magnetic about its walls. Perhaps because they were built in the 11th century by Muslims, at a time when the Algarve was Al-Andalus. Walking there is like walking through layers of history, literally.

Chegar ao castelo foi como entrar num espaço entre o real e o imaginado. Não é um castelo daqueles de contos de fadas ,com torres altas, bandeiras ao vento e salões cheios de tapeçarias. Nada disso. O de Tavira é mais modesto, mais contido. Mas há algo de profundamente magnético nas suas muralhas. Talvez porque foram erguidas no século XI pelos muçulmanos, numa altura em que o Algarve era Al-Andalus. Andar por ali é caminhar sobre camadas de história, literalmente.
When the Christians reconquered Tavira in the 13th century, under the leadership of Dom Paio Peres Correia, the castle was taken over and assumed a different function, a different symbolism. And it was precisely where a mosque once stood that the Church of Santa Maria do Castelo was born, shortly thereafter. The historical irony of this was not lost on me. How do sacred spaces change names and faiths, yet remain places of spiritual seeking?

Quando os cristãos reconquistaram Tavira no século XIII, pelas mãos de D. Paio Peres Correia, o castelo foi tomado e passou a ter outra função, outra simbologia. E foi exatamente onde existia uma mesquita que nasceu, pouco tempo depois, a Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo. A ironia histórica disto não me passou despercebida. Como é que espaços sagrados mudam de nome e de fé, mas continuam a ser lugares de procura espiritual?
The church is imposing yet discreet. It doesn't have the exaggerated baroque of other parts of the country, but there's something about its clock tower, white, elegant, with black dials, that dominates the landscape with dignity. I felt a kind of silent respect as I walked there. Not because I'm religious (I'm not), but because I sense there's something deeply human in these spaces that resist time.

A Igreja é imponente de forma discreta. Não tem o barroco exagerado de outras zonas do país, mas há algo na sua torre do relógio, branca, elegante, com mostradores negros, que domina a paisagem com dignidade. Senti uma espécie de respeito silencioso ao caminhar por ali. Não por ser religiosa (não sou), mas por sentir que há algo de profundamente humano nestes espaços que resistem ao tempo.
I tried to capture not only the space, but also the life that pulses around it. The coming and going of tourists was constant. Some arrived with maps in hand, others with phones pointed to the sky. I saw couples kissing in the shade of the walls, children running through the gardens, and gentlemen wearing hats who seemed to have come from another time. I tried to photograph all of this without interfering, like someone looking through the crack of a half-open door. I wanted to preserve the visual memory of the place, but also its soul.

Tentei captar não só o espaço, mas a vida que pulsa em volta. O vaivém dos turistas era constante. Uns chegavam com mapas nas mãos, outros com telefones apontados para o céu. Vi casais a trocar beijos à sombra das muralhas, crianças a correr pelos jardins, e senhores de chapéu que pareciam ter vindo de outra época. Tentei fotografar isso tudo sem interferir. Como quem espreita pela fresta de uma porta entreaberta. Queria guardar a memória visual do lugar, mas também a sua alma.
Tavira, with its castle and church, offered me a place where the past still breathes, but without demanding prominence. Where history is present, but not rigid. A place where beauty lies in the stones, but also in the people who pass by—tourists, residents, vendors, dreamers. And that's why, if you ever find yourself in Tavira, I leave you with this advice: climb up to the castle. Enter the church. Sit for a while and listen. Not just to the sounds around you, but to what the place has to say to you. Because sometimes, the journey isn't just outward. It's inward too.

Tavira, com o seu castelo e a sua igreja, ofereceu-me um lugar onde o passado ainda respira, mas sem pedir protagonismo. Onde a história está presente, mas não engessada. Um lugar onde a beleza está nas pedras, mas também nas pessoas que por ali passam , turistas, locais, vendedores, sonhadores. E é por isso que, se algum dia fores até Tavira, te deixo este conselho: sobe até ao castelo. Entra na igreja. Senta-te um pouco e ouve. Não só os sons à tua volta, mas o que o lugar tem para te dizer. Porque às vezes, a viagem não é só para fora. É para dentro também.
