Waking up on the Portuguese coast and not rushing to the beach is, let's face it, absurd. The sound of the waves, the smell of salt, that golden light that seems to only exist here… everything pulls us to the sand as if destiny were written in the tides. But that day in Tavira, the sun decided to sleep in. The sky dawned overcast, gray, with that "I'm not in anyone's mood today" look, and I, already seeing myself with my feet in the sand and salt in my hair, stared out the window, half disappointed, half free. Because when the day doesn't go as planned, you either regret what didn't happen or you take another path.

Acordar na costa portuguesa e não correr para a praia é, convenhamos, um despautério. O som das ondas, o cheiro a sal, aquela luz dourada que parece que só existe aqui… tudo nos empurra para o areal como se fosse destino escrito nas marés. Mas naquele dia em Tavira, o sol decidiu dormir até mais tarde. O céu amanheceu tapado, cinzento, com aquele ar de “hoje não estou para ninguém”, e eu ,que já me via com os pés na areia e o sal no cabelo, fiquei a olhar pela janela, meia desiludida, meia livre. Porque quando o dia te foge ao plano, ou ficas a lamentar o que não foi, ou segues por outro caminho.
It was then that, almost by chance or perhaps not, the suggestion appeared: Gallery Palace. A pamphlet on the TV stand, perhaps waiting for someone like me to notice. I confess that the idea of visiting a museum instead of the beach seemed, at first glance, like a cloudy-weather backup plan. But any place with the word "palace" in it already wins points in my imagination. And so, with a camera on my shoulder and zero expectations, we went there.

Foi aí que, quase por acaso ou talvez não, apareceu a sugestão: Palácio da Galeria. Um panfleto no móvel da tv, talvez à espera que alguém como eu o notasse. Confesso que a ideia de visitar um museu em vez da praia parecia, à primeira vista, um plano de B de tempo nublado. Mas qualquer sítio com a palavra “palácio” já ganha pontos no meu imaginário. E assim, com a câmara ao ombro e zero expectativas, lá fomos.
The Palácio da Galeria, or, for the more formal, Palácio dos Corte-Real, sits at one of Tavira's highest points, as if the city itself had built it there so it could take a peek at everything around it. It's said to have been built over an ancient Phoenician cistern, which immediately left me with the feeling of walking through layers and layers of history. I love that: places that seem simple on the surface, but hide centuries of stories, intrigues, and maybe even a few ghosts. I didn't see any, but I swear I heard a suspicious creaking sound on a staircase.

O Palácio da Galeria, ou, para os mais formais, Palácio dos Corte-Real, fica num dos pontos altos de Tavira, como se a própria cidade o tivesse construído ali para que pudesse espreitar tudo à sua volta. Diz-se que foi erguido sobre uma cisterna fenícia antiga, o que me deixou logo com aquela sensação de estar a caminhar sobre camadas e camadas de história. Adoro isso: lugares que parecem simples à superfície, mas que escondem séculos de histórias, intrigas e talvez até alguns fantasmas. Não vi nenhum, mas juro que ouvi um rangido suspeito numa escada.
The building itself is beautiful. The architecture blends styles like someone collecting memories. There are Renaissance touches, Baroque elements, and a discreet grandeur that makes you walk slowly. As we entered, we felt that delightful silence of soulful spaces. The kind of silence that forces you to listen to your own thoughts, which can even be dangerous, but that day was good.

O edifício em si é lindíssimo. A arquitetura mistura estilos como quem coleciona memórias. Há ali traços renascentistas, elementos barrocos e uma imponência discreta que te faz andar devagar. À medida que entravamos, sentimos aquele silêncio bom dos espaços com alma. O tipo de silêncio que te obriga a ouvir os próprios pensamentos, que pode até ser perigoso, mas naquele dia soube bem.
Today, the palace is home to the Tavira Municipal Museum, with exhibitions that change with the city's rhythm. The one I found explored the concept of identity and territory. No decorative art to beautify walls: it was art that put its finger on the wound, that told real stories of those who live in the Algarve beyond the tourist postcards. Installations, videos, photographs, all full of meaning and, above all, feeling. It was like seeing the Algarve without makeup. Raw, beautiful, true.

Hoje, o palácio é casa do Museu Municipal de Tavira, com exposições que mudam ao ritmo da cidade. A que encontrei explorava o conceito de identidade e território. Nada de arte decorativa para embelezar paredes: era arte que punha o dedo na ferida, que contava histórias reais de quem vive o Algarve para lá dos postais turísticos. Instalações, vídeos, fotografias, tudo cheio de significado e, acima de tudo, de sentimento. Foi como ver o Algarve sem maquilhagem. Cru, bonito, verdadeiro.
I hadn't gone to Tavira to see contemporary art inside a palace, but there I was, completely captivated, with the feeling that perhaps this had been the true plan all along. Only I didn't know it yet.

Não fui a Tavira para ver arte contemporânea dentro de um palácio, mas ali estava eu, completamente rendida, com a sensação de que talvez esse tivesse sido o verdadeiro plano desde o início. Só que eu ainda não sabia.
I sat on one of the stone benches in one of the white rooms, surrounded by silence and images that seemed to speak louder than a thousand tour guides. And I found myself wondering: why are we so resistant to changing our plans? Why do we think that if something isn't as we imagined, then it's no longer worth it? Perhaps the secret to traveling, and perhaps even life, lies precisely there. Embracing improvisation, letting chance guide us to where we should have gone from the beginning.

Sentei-me num dos bancos de pedra de uma das salas brancas, rodeada de silêncio e imagens que pareciam falar mais do que mil guias turísticos. E dei por mim pensar no motivo pelo qual resistimos tanto a mudar os planos? Porque é que achamos que, se algo não for como imaginámos, então já não vale a pena? Talvez o segredo de viajar e quem sabe até da vida, esteja precisamente aí. Aceitar o improviso, em deixar que o acaso nos guie para onde devíamos ter ido desde o início.

Seeing those faces scattered across the walls and the photographs from the 70s (possibly) made me think about how everything has evolved so quickly that I think we haven't taken advantage of any of this evolution. There's always a rush, satisfaction must be immediate, and little is valued. I hope our daughter takes something from us and learns not to rush everything. May you never lose that desire to be a child and enjoy the moment.

Ver aqueles rostos espalhados pelas paredes e as fotografias dos anos 70 (possivelmente) fez me pensar no quanto tudo evoluiu tão rapidamente que acho que não aproveitamos nada dessa evolução. A pressa é sempre muita, a satisfação tem de ser imediata e pouco é valorizado. Espero que a nossa filha leve algo de nós e aprenda a não ter pressa em tudo. Que nunca perca aquela vontade de ser criança e de aproveitar o momento.

If you ever find yourself in Tavira and the weather isn't right for swimming, take a detour to the Palácio da Galeria. Or even if it's sunny, go anyway. Because sometimes, escaping the beach is the best way to discover what truly enchants us.

Se alguma vez forem a Tavira e o tempo não estiver para banhos, façam um desvio até ao Palácio da Galeria. Ou mesmo que esteja sol vão na mesma. Porque às vezes, fugir da praia é a melhor maneira de descobrir o que realmente nos encanta.
