We must all agree with me that time management is an act that we must all learn because it's not an innate skill. I don't think anyone was born knowing how to effectively manage and master how to use their hours, yet for us to thrive effectively, we must learn how to manage our hours. The human body, by its very nature, craves comfort and rest, and if we allow it, trust me, it would more often than not find ways to avoid putting effort and responsibility into anything; rather, it prefers to stay idle and procrastinate all around the clock. This is one of the reasons why, even when we have pressing tasks and goals to accomplish, we mostly find ourselves wasting precious time, putting important things off, and giving in to laziness.
Have we noticed that there’s always a constant battle between the body and the soul? That's why there's a saying that the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. The spirit wants us to move forward, so there's usually this push to achieve something, at least to make the most of our days. Yet there's usually a wide gap between our intentions and actions that often requires us being disciplined and focused and also making a conscious effort to manage and master our time effectively.
I won't say I am one hundred percent effective when it comes to time management; as a matter of fact, there are days I just want to laze around like "The Lazy Song" by Bruno Mars and not do anything. However, what has helped me manage my time to a large extent is knowing the fact that every one of us is given 24 hours in a day regardless of who we are or where we come from. So I must wisely choose to make good use of my own time. I constantly tell myself that some of the people I admire today are where they are because of how they are making good use of the same 24 hours that seem not to be enough for some. I believe that having an understanding that time is finite, and once it is spent, it can never be reclaimed, would also help us manage our time effectively.
I have come to learn that effective time management requires intentionality. It means that I have to set clear goals, prioritize important tasks, and learn to say no to any kind of distractions that present themselves. Most times I plan how my day will go, even though there are days that things don't go as planned, but still planning has helped me a lot, because I no longer waste time on what might be important but is not a priority at that moment. I have learned that every hour I spend on something trivial is an hour that has been taken away from something meaningful. While it is very important for us to rest, at least for our overall well-being, we must also know that too much indulgence in comfort can hinder progress.
