From a very young age, I learned not to have an entitlement mentality; I learned to let go of that belief that someone owes me anything in life. I have always known that if I wanted something, I had to work hard to achieve it, without relying on an uncle, an aunt, or anyone else to make it happen for me. At least my dad made me and my siblings realize this early in life. We are not our uncles' or aunties' responsibilities, so we shouldn't expect anything from them. This mindset helped me very well in the way I approach life, teaching me that I have to be self-reliant.
There's a prevalent attitude among many people in this part of my country that makes them think others owe them something. This has made a lot of them bitter and frustrated when those they hoped would help don’t come through for them. You would often hear people whining and complaining about how someone they knew, maybe a relative, a friend, or a connection, didn’t step in to assist them when they needed their help. I have a lot of people say something like, "I would have landed a great job," or "I could have graduated from school," or "I would have started a successful business," if only someone had helped them.
I am not ignoring the part that at various points in life, we all need help from others; however, it would be very important for us to know that no one is obligated to help you. A lot of people have different reasons why they might not want or be able to help you. So I feeling resentment toward them doesn't just make any sense; it only holds the person back. Instead of always expecting others to pave the way for us or do something for us, the best thing to do is to take responsibility for their own goals and dreams.
And I am not saying that we should reject help when it’s been offered to us or avoid asking for assistance when we truly need it. All I am saying is people should let go of an entitlement mentality; our success in life ultimately depends on us. I feel Blaming others for what we haven’t achieved is just counterproductive.
