This week’s topic is really interesting because it touches on a reality we all face daily in our lives. We live in a bustling world; everyone seems to be on their toes, either juggling responsibilities or chasing after their goals. However, no matter how busy a lot of people may seem, there are still a lot of things that cause distraction and pull our focus in different directions.
We all must agree that one of the biggest culprits that has caused distractions in today’s world is the internet. While the Internet has been an incredible tool for information and connection, it is also a double-edged sword. If one is not careful, it is very easy to get lost by scrolling endlessly online. Apart from the Internet, there is also financial pressure, the pressure to keep up with bills, work pressure, and so on.
However, there are things we can do to stay focused in this busy world, and one thing that has worked for me is setting goals and working towards them. There is something powerful about writing the vision and making it plain. Many people do not write their visions, they live on the go, and so it is easy for them to get distracted by everything that looks like what they are trying to achieve. If you do not know where you are going, everywhere will look like where you are going.
Having a vision before you is such a compelling force. Having a mental picture of that desirable future always in front of you is not just important, but it is a non-negotiable game changer. That picture has a way of keeping you committed. It has a way of keeping you on track. It has a way of keeping you staying on course. Many times people who get distracted fall victim to what distracts them because they do not have something compelling enough to pull them in its direction.
Another strategy for staying focused in a distracted world is having an accountability partner or structure. When you surround yourself with friends who are serious with their lives and purpose, it is almost impossible for you to get dissuaded. Your network of friends becomes your safe haven; they become your refuge, your shelter from the storm out there, and a place for recouping and relaunching. As an accountability partner, your friend is not just a cheerleader that sings your praises when you are ticking off the boxes on your to-do list but a taskmaster that keeps you in check on your goals and timelines.
Another way to stay focused in a distracted world is by making a conscious effort to create a distraction-free zone. Many people have their workspace cluttered, and the bulk of what occupies their work surface is distracting, as it has no direct correlation to their purpose. Many times, we need to detox, and detoxing could include freezing the social media applications on your phone for a while so that you are not distracted by notifications and posts that could eat into your already allocated time. Sometimes, it could mean a change of environment for the meantime. I know of people that relocate to hotels when they are working on a sensitive and focus-demanding project. It is not because their house is bad, but the comfort of the house would not allow them to concentrate and meet the deadline.
I know the world is distracting, but it pays to stay focused.
