As noted in my last post, we really enjoy the many birds that frequent our bird feeder. Because of this, I have decided to post about the diverse population of our flying friends here in Missouri. As I get good video and photo's I will share them here and include some general info about each.

Today I present the Red-bellied woodpecker. This variety is larger than most of the song birds we feed, but they manage to hang onto the feeder and have their lunch.

Red-bellied woodpecker info

The Red-bellied woodpecker is a medium-sized woodpecker living mainly in the eastern United States, ranging from Texas to Canada. They nest in dead trees, old stumps, or in live trees that have softer wood such as elms, maples, or willows. For food, the red-bellied woodpeckers mainly search out insects on tree trunks, but also eat fruits, nuts, and seeds. Its name is somewhat misleading, as the most prominent red part of its plumage is on the head.
