When you start birdwatching, you don't expect to fall in love with the activity the way you do. You don't imagine how much satisfaction and pleasure you will get from the little winged friends you will encounter on each trip to the countryside. It wasn't until recently that I received a very special donation from a semi-anonymous friend. A brand new, almost unused CANON EOS 7D camera, with which I was able to make my first Ebird records documented with images.

No fue hasta hace poco tiempo que recibí una donación muy especial de un amigo semi anónimo. The joy was short-lived, as I only received the camera with a couple of batteries and no charger. So I continued making my observations and lists for a couple more months until the charger and two lenses arrived instead of one. My excitement faded a little when I opened the package, as it contained an 18–55mm lens and the 300mm zoom lens I was expecting did not arrive. Instead, I received a 75–250mm lens, which I have been working with so far. So, with my new toy, I set out full of expectations to take my first shots. As you can imagine, the photos didn't turn out as I had hoped. No, my friends, a camera is not just about shooting and that's it. I've been trying to take photos for two years, and although they are getting better every day, I still think I have a lot to learn about this world that has come into my life to stay.
La alegría duró poco, pues solo recibí la cámara con un par de baterías y sin cargador. Así que seguí realizando mis observaciones y listados por un par de meses más hasta que llegaron el cargador y dos lentes en vez de uno. La alegría del momento se disipó un poco cuando abrí el paquete, pues venía una lente 18 – 55mm y el lente Zoom 300mm que esperaba no llegó. En su lugar recibí una lente 75 – 250mm, con la que he estado trabajando hasta el momento. Así que, con mi nuevo juguete, salí lleno de expectativas a hacer mis primeras tomas. Como pueden imaginar, las fotos no resultaron como esperaba. No amigos míos, una cámara no es solo disparar y ya está. Llevo par de años tratando de hacer fotos y aunque van quedando mejor cada día, todavía pienso, me falta mucho por aprender de este mundo que ha llegado a mi vida para quedarse.
Practically, I discovered that a 250mm lens is not ideal for photographing birds. So I had to perfect my techniques to get as close as possible to the bird without it taking flight. Sometimes the birds stayed longer, and I didn't understand why. Then, while editing and looking closely at the details, I realized that birds can also get sick. I discovered that they suffer from various conditions, accidents, mutilations, and brutal attacks from predators, which can ultimately end their lives.
En la práctica descubrí que un lente de 250mm no es el ideal para hacerle fotos a las aves. Así que tuve que perfeccionar las técnicas para poder acercarme tanto como fuera posible al ave sin que esta emprendiera el vuelo. Algunas veces, las aves se quedaron más tiempo y no entendía por qué. Luego me percaté, al editar y ver de cerca los detalles, de que las aves también pueden enfermar. Descubrí que padecen diferentes afecciones, sufren accidentes, mutilaciones y ataques brutales de sus depredadores que, en última instancia, pueden dar al traste con su vida.
This little bird that I am bringing to your attention is a Northern Parula / Bijirita chica / Zetophaga americana. I found it in a friend's yard, looking rather unwell, and decided to give it some water and food. It responded immediately to the stimulus, drinking and eating heartily. These birds are very restless, always on the move, but this one in particular showed clear signs of illness, and you could see some nodules on its legs. Perhaps with the flu, it clung weakly to the branches and its movements were quite slow. With time and care, it improved and took over my friend's backyard.
Estás pequeña avecilla que pongo a su consideración es una Northern Parula / Bijirita chica / Zetophaga americana. La encontré en el patio de un amigo con sus achaques y decidí ponerle un poco de agua y alimento. Inmediatamente respondió al estímulo, bebió y comió a placer. Estas aves son muy intranquilas, siempre en movimiento, pero esta en particular, tenía signos evidentes de estar enferma y se podían ver algunos nódulos en sus patas. Quizás con gripe, se agarraba sin mucha fuerza a las ramas y sus movimientos eran bastante lentos. Con el tiempo y los cuidados mejoró y se adueñó del patio de mi amigo.
And that's how I was able to take my first decent photos with the new equipment, while helping a little bird and, incidentally, planting the seed of “bird watching” in my companion. The little bird stayed in the courtyard throughout that winter and spring. Until one fine day, it was no longer to be seen. Who knows if our little winged friend, the owner of that courtyard in Santiago de las Vegas, was able to set off and make the difficult flight home without any mishaps.
Y fue así como pude hacer mis primeras fotos algo decentes con el nuevo equipo, mientras ayudaba a una pequeña avecilla y de paso sembraba el bichito de la “observación de aves” en mi compañero. El pequeño pájaro permaneció en el patio durante aquel invierno y la primavera. Hasta que un buen día, no se le volvió a ver. Quién sabe si nuestra pequeña amiga alada, la dueña de aquel patio en Santiago de las Vegas, habrá podido emprender y hacer sin contratiempos el duro vuelo de regreso a casa.
