If you've been to Cuba or anywhere in the intertropical regions of our planet, you'll agree that the experience can be defined with a single word, and that word is none other than "vibrant."
Todo es una explosión de contrastes, de matices, de colores y vida. Si tu experiencia personal ha sido distinta es una pena amigo mío, quizás no fuiste con las “personas adecuadas”. Te aseguro que hasta para los cubanos, apartados del paraíso terrenal en el que nos ha tocado vivir y por la fuerza del mundo propio de nuestras complejas cotidianidades, es, cuando ocurre, un acontecimiento trascendental. Los amigos del Birdwatchers Club de la Habana no me dejarán mentir. La experiencia es única y te deja con ganas de más.
Everything is an explosion of contrasts, nuances, colors, and life. If your personal experience was different, that's a shame, my friend. Perhaps you didn't go with the "right people." I assure you that even for Cubans, cut off from the earthly paradise in which we live and by the force of our complex everyday world, it is, when it happens, a transcendental event. The friends of the Havana Birdwatchers Club won't let me lie. The experience is unique and leaves you wanting more.
De todas las actividades que puedes realizar cuando estás en el trópico, hacer “birding” es, como dicen, una pasada. Ser observador de aves es un pasatiempo genial. Lo es para el que sabe de la experiencia y para el que no. Lo es si solo cuentas con una libreta de notas y una guía de campo como herramientas, o si tienes binoculares y apps en el móvil que te ayuden en la identificación. Mucho más si posees una cámara fotográfica y los lentes adecuados para validar cualquier registro que hagas con impresionantes tomas. El resultado es, en todos los casos, un sentimiento de bienestar y placer persistente y semi adictivo que se renueva en cada salida. Lo afirmo porque he sido en estos años, esa persona en cada una de esas situaciones y siempre me ha resultado maravillosa la experiencia.
Of all the activities you can do when you're in the tropics, birdwatching is, as they say, a blast. Being a birdwatcher is a great pastime. It's great for those with experience and for those without. It's great whether you only have a notebook and a field guide as tools, or binoculars and apps on your phone to help you identify birds. It's even more so if you have a camera and the right lenses to validate any recordings you make with impressive shots. The result is, in every case, a persistent, semi-addictive feeling of well-being and pleasure that is renewed with each outing. I say this because I've been that person in each of those situations over the years, and I've always found the experience wonderful.
Claro está, debemos partir del presupuesto del gusto personal de cada quien por lo natural, la predisposición a la aventura y a las actividades al aire libre. Si cuentas con esa cualidad de disfrutar los paseos por el campo con cara de guerrilla, entonces, amigo mío, usted puede ser un birdwatcher.
Of course, we must start from the assumption of each person's personal taste for nature, their predisposition to adventure, and their love of outdoor activities. If you possess that quality of enjoying walks in the countryside with a guerrilla attitude, then, my friend, you can be a birdwatcher.
Ese también es el criterio de mi amigo Cameron Duncan, permacultor y apasionado de las abejas en el oeste de Nuevo México, EUA. El año pasado pudimos ver como su esposa y sus amigos Susan, Jenny, Lucy, Meredith y Sheldon se transformaban en verdaderos birdwatchers en el limitado intervalo de una semana.

Sitting in his backyard, watching the leaves fall, he called out to his friends and said, "Ladies and gentlemen, we're going to the Caribbean." And so they arrived in Havana, where the experienced nature tour guide Ernesto Reyes Mouriño and I were waiting for them.
No podría expresar con palabras mis propias impresiones de aquel viaje, mucho menos las de estos amigos que descubrieron con nosotros, entre apagones, la inclemencia del tiempo y las vicisitudes de cada cubano con los que interactuaron, las maravillas que se esconden en esos sitios recónditos de la isla.
I couldn't put into words my own impressions of that trip, much less those of these friends who, amidst the blackouts, the harsh weather, and the vicissitudes of every Cuban they interacted with, discovered the wonders hidden in those remote corners of the island.
Solo basta mirar la cara de satisfacción de Jenny luego de alimentar con sus propias manos al “ave más pequeña del mundo”. Just look at Jenny's satisfied face after feeding the "world's smallest bird" with her own hands.
Y eso, amigo mío y un montón de cosas más, es posible vivirlo una vez en la vida, sólo si decides escapar de las grises y frías latitudes y te vienes, en plan casual, con la compañía de unos amigos, de vacaciones al Caribe. Embúllate este invierno y ven a vivir la experiencia de hacer birding justo aquí, en el trópico.
And that, my friend, and a whole lot more, is possible once in a lifetime, only if you decide to escape the gray, cold latitudes and come, casually, with some friends, on vacation to the Caribbean. Get excited this winter and come experience birdwatching right here, in the tropics.
