Mosscloak, Keeper of the forest

Good day, friends of the forest world and draw a day community.

I am sharing today’s piece for the #Charactober drawing challenge of our friend @london65. The prompt is Mosscloak. I didn’t really plan it out although the prompt is already giving; I just started scribbling lines and shapes, and this long, sloping figure formed, cloaked in layers of dirt and some growth. It began as this loose sketch of a shadowed being with a hood, then slowly, the idea of moss and mushrooms took over.

The first messy lines are about movement and form. Then the black and white outline gave the basic silhouette I like, and when I started layering the greens, browns, and faint blue fungi, the thing began to take a form.

I kept imagining the smell of wet earth, the slow decay of matter, the gentle drizzle of rain or forest mist. That’s what I wanted the colors to feel like which should be swampy, damp, dark and soft.

The final image reflects some heaviness. Every patch of moss, every sprouting mushroom became a little world of its own just like how it says on the prompt guidelines. It is my drawing style to show imperfect textures and rough lines. That is what I like about it.

I’m joining this Charactober challenge because I like the theme for this week. I know there is a lot to discover and explore given the richness of the ideas about the plants in the forest. I want to make characters that feel like they crawled out of somewhere, could be gentle beings or force of nature that are feared. This one, Mosscloak made me want to participate.

Character Name: Mosscloak Lore: Born from the damp forest roots, Mosscloak carries the weight of the forest’s gloom. Wherever it goes, silence deepens and life happens beneath the soil.
