In Nigeria, most people don't like cats. There are a few myths (that may be responsible for this) which have been passed down from generation to generation without anyone trying to verify the veracity of these myths. Below are a few of these myths
-
CATS POSSESS EVIL SPIRITS If you see a few Nigerian movies, cats appear in scenes where some sort of evil spirit or witchcraft activities take place. A lot of witches are believed to change to cats when they carry out their evil deeds or when they are going for their meetings. This myth also affirms that stray cats are found around plantain or banana trees. These trees are believe to be the location points for witchcraft meetings

CATS' SALIVA CAN CAUSE BLINDNESS Obviously I wouldn't want to experiment with my eyes to find out if this is true. It is believed that if a cat should spit in your eyes, the eyes would go blind. Maybe there are some evidences of truth in this, I am yet to know!

A CAT'S BACK WILL NEVER TOUCH THE FLOOR I think this is not a myth really. No matter how long, short or high you throw a cat, it will always land on it's legs. You can give it a try.

CATS HAVE NINE LIVES Technically they also have a single life. This myth has its believe in the fact that cats don't die easily. Killing a cat is one of the gruesome things I have witnessed and it took repeated attempts for the cat to die. I guess this is why we say cats have nine lives.
But are cat's bad? I don't think so! In homes where you have a cat, you will never find a mouse or a rat. It's only in disney movies you find tom chasing after jerry and jerry evading. Cats prey on mice.
Cats are also neat animals, they take their baths on regular occasions...with their saliva of course and you won't find a cat's poo anywhere. A cat will dig the ground, poo and then cover it up.
I think cats are incredible pets that add positivity but they have been stigmatized especially in my own sphere of life. You don't want to be there when a cat is being killed. It is the height of wickedness. The cat will be put in a sac and then the sac will be struck against a hard surface with the cat in it. After repeated hits, they eventually succumb.
I think cats are incredible pets that should be given a chance especially in my country Nigeria.
