He had always been a friend of the family and when Cassandra lost her parents, he was there for her all through the most difficult times of her life. He sponsored her through school and ensured she got the best education he could afford. Not that Smith was a rich guy, he worked at as factory worker in a nearby soda company. His salary was meagre but he could not afford to see Cassandra drop out of school after her parents died. He was the ninth child of a family of twelve. His parents had nothing to offer them. Survival was the main agenda. Smith started working when he was 6yrs while his age mates were in school. It was one of those days when he was working as a pizza delivery guy that he met Cassandra and they became friends. Smith was too shy to tell her how he really felt about her even though it was written all over him how in love he was. Even though he felt like telling her, he felt it was not the right time. He didn't want anything that may give her any distraction from her studies.
In his misery, he did all his best to ensure Cassandra did not suffer even though he was starving too. It was a glorious day when Cassandra finally finished her degree program and Smith was the happiest man on earth.

Finally, he was going to make his intentions known to her after a decade of waiting. After all the festivities, they were finally alone. He called Cassandra to the room and then went on one knee as he proposed to her... "will you marry me?!"

There was a great silence that seemed to last for all eternity, the sudden drop of the ring he was holding brought them back to reality. Smith could not hold his tears as Cassandra said no. All along she had thought that Smith only wanted to help her. She didn't think he wanted her to be his wife. Cassandra had fallen in love with Charles, a colleague she met on the campus and she had accepted his proposal. She is terribly confused!

Cassandra was all Smith had, she was all his life investment and now everything seemed to burst open like a bubble. He did not know when the tears started flowing like a fountain as he turned the door knob to walk out of her life for the last time. Who was at fault? Was Cassandra an ingrate? Was Smith a fool? Is true love a scam? Have your say
