Caring for the Mind That Does the Work

A few days ago, I wrote about paying attention to our physical health so we can perform better at work. That still stands, but I’ve also realized that taking care of our mental health is just as important. A strong body helps us show up, a steady mind helps us stay.

When our mind is cared for, it’s easier to focus, make decisions, and handle pressure without spiraling into stress. I remember a time when I felt so overwhelmed that quitting sounded like the only solution. Looking back, I didn’t need a dramatic exit, I just needed a real break. Stepping away for a short while, disconnecting from tasks, and letting my mind reset made all the difference. I returned clearer, calmer, and ready to do the work.

Here are simple habits that have helped me protect my mental space:

  • Take short pauses during long stretches of work. A three-minute walk or a few deep breaths can reset your head.
  • Keep boundaries after hours when possible. Rest is not laziness, it’s maintenance.
  • Journal quick thoughts when stress piles up. Putting worries on paper keeps them from crowding your focus.
  • Choose music that supports your energy, not fights it.
  • Talk to someone you trust. Sometimes perspective is the relief.

These aren’t big moves, but they compound. The result is less stress, fewer mistakes, and a healthier version of ourselves showing up for the team.

“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.” — Anne Lamott

If you’re carrying too much today, try a small reset. Step back, breathe, and come back when your mind is ready. Your work will be better, and so will you.
