Keeping the Fire Lit at Work

Maintaining motivation at work is the part I find most challenging. I notice my drive dips quickly whenever I’m tired, tasks feel heavier, small problems look bigger, and my focus slips. I used to push through and call it “discipline,” but I’ve learned that sheer force isn’t sustainable. What actually helps me is simple, rest, real food, and small resets.

Good sleep is my first line of defense. When I wake up rested, I’m less reactive and more patient with myself and others. Eating healthy food keeps my energy steady through the day, no big spikes, no harsh crashes. And when fatigue builds up, taking time off from work works like a hard reset for my mood. A quiet day, a slow breakfast, even a short walk helps me come back clearer and more motivated.

Massage has also become part of my toolkit. It loosens the knots I collect from long hours at a desk and reminds my body to relax. After a session, I’m lighter, my mind moves better, and the to-do list stops feeling like a wall.

These are small, basic habits, but they compound. Consistent rest, simple meals, occasional breaks, and recovery time are the fuel that makes effort possible. When I care for myself first, the motivation follows naturally. I show up ready, not dragging.

If you’re struggling to keep your motivation up, try these basics for a week. Protect your sleep. Eat for energy, not just convenience. Step away before you burn out. Book that massage if you can. You might be surprised how quickly your motivation returns when your body and mind feel cared for.

“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.” — Anne Lamott
