Chasing Shooting Stars: Our Summer Tradition

Every August, I look forward to one of my favorite nights of the year – the Perseid meteor shower. It has become a small tradition for me and my boyfriend to drive out to the countryside, to my parents’ place, and spend a few hours under the night sky. There is always something magical about watching shooting stars together, even if the conditions aren’t perfect.

This year the sky wasn’t fully on our side. The first night it got cloudy quite early, and the second night the clouds rolled in later as well. On top of that, more than half of the Moon was shining bright, which made the sky less dark than I would have hoped. Still, we stayed outside for several hours, wrapped up against the chilly night air, just waiting for those beautiful flashes of light.

Despite the challenges, we managed to see quite a few meteors. It wasn’t as many as in some previous years, but each one still felt special. I didn’t take too many photos because I wanted to simply enjoy the moment, but I did capture a couple of shots to remember the night. At one point, I even tried photographing the Milky Way just for fun. It’s barely visible in the photo, with colors a little distorted because of the moonlight, but I’m still glad I gave it a try.

What I love most about these nights is not just the meteors themselves, but the whole experience. Being out in the countryside, surrounded by silence, wrapped in blankets, watching the sky with someone I love – it always feels peaceful and grounding. Even when it gets cold or the clouds ruin the view, there is a kind of beauty in just being there.

And every year, after our Perseid nights, my boyfriend writes song inspired by it. It has become part of our little ritual, and it makes the memory even more special. I’ve shared the link below if you’d like to listen.

For me, these summer nights under the stars are not just about watching meteors, but about creating moments that I’ll treasure year after year.
