Hello again gardening friends! May began with an amazing trip to Vancouver, Canada, but I'm back in time to check in for the May Garden Journal fun. Speaking of gardens, after missing the opportunity when we passed through on our cruise last year, we did make the jump over to Victoria to see Butchart Gardens. That deserves a whole post itself, but my goodness were those gardens stunning...

And at least one more because I left a piece of my heart there...

Peas

While I am not much of a flower gardener, we do have the first "flowers" popping up, with the first harvest right behind. I noticed the pea flowers before I left were starting to push out the first of the snow peas. Having the first mini harvest ready is one way to temper the post-vacation blues.

Squash

The squash shouldn't be too far behind now, with the patty pan being the first to push out fruit. A few of these babies are looking lush!

And More Squash

The pumpkins, Candy Roasters and Zucchino Rampicantes are exploding, as well, but I'll save those for when we actually start to get some fruit. The Golden Zucchini also is showing the first fruits. I can never get enough of the baby fruits. The joy of plant parenting.🤣

Maters

The tomatoes have finally started hitting their stride, as well. So much so that @dksart did his usual thing and crafted some homemade supports as they'll soon need it to keep growing tall. I am definitely starting to crave fresh tomatoes. That is one thing I am ruined for buying from the grocery store.

Cukes

We've had a few cooler days, but for the most part the weather is staying warm which means the cucumbers and watermelon are happier. We have some more cucumber seedlings to put out soon, since unlike @owasco mentioned in her recent post, we can't get enough cucumbers and homemade pickles! I just need to ensure I have some dill somewhere shady so we still have some by the time the cukes are ready to ferment.

Herbs

Speaking of herbs, I just pulled the first basil and dill to put in my soup for dinner this evening. The oregano, mint and lemon balm have gone absolutely mad, as usual, so it's time to start remembering to pop out before every meal and clip some of the good stuff.

The fruit trees still seem to be doing well, but as I shared them last month, I'll save those for another time. Some of the plums are dropping again, which shouldn't be too surprising given our trees are still fairly immature. The figs are already starting to push out fruit, so hoping for at least some good homegrown sweet stuff this year!

May really is one of my favorite months in the garden. While things can still be unpredictable, the promise of what is to come is more evident than ever. The patience from early spring is finally paying off! Thanks to @riverflows and the @gardenhive crew for keeping this party going. I wish we could all share our abundance together, but I suppose sharing the enjoyment of the process, tips and tricks, and successes is a big part of the fun!
