Becoming a DJ is a dream of many of us, isn't it? Not only to push your selfesteem, earn money or to get the chicas. Being a DJ is not only a present to yourself, but to your listeners! It is very uplifting to make the crowd happy and share a great time with them. And the truth is... To start is easier & more cheap than you might think!

DJ zu werden ist ein Traum von vielen von uns, nicht wahr? Nicht nur, um das eigene Selbstwertgefühl zu steigern, Geld zu verdienen oder um die Chicas zu erobern. Ein DJ zu sein ist nicht nur ein Geschenk an dich selbst, sondern auch an deine Zuhörer! Es ist sehr erhebend, das Publikum glücklich zu machen und eine tolle Zeit mit ihm zu verbringen. Und die Wahrheit ist... Der Einstieg ist einfacher und billiger, als Du vielleicht denkst!

Let us go thru the basic aspects of becoming a DJ - at least on the tech side. It is not much you need to know or need to have to start right away. Maybe today? You can do start today and I prove it to you!

P.S.: About the skills we will talk in an upcoming post. But don't let this slow you down. The skill of DJing can be an art, but is very often very basic and there are plenty free ressouces to learn them in a short amount of time. The first basics you can learn pretty fast. The art comes in when you combine these skills and grow them, stack and level them up. In every case it is no rocket science. Don't be scared!

P.S.: Über die Fähigkeiten werden wir in einem der nächsten Beiträge sprechen. Aber lass dich davon nicht aufhalten. Die Kunst des DJing kann eine Kunst sein, ist aber oft sehr einfach und es gibt viele kostenlose Möglichkeiten, sie in kurzer Zeit zu lernen. Die ersten Grundlagen kannst du ziemlich schnell lernen. Die Kunst besteht darin, diese Fertigkeiten zu kombinieren und sie auszubauen, zu erweitern und zu verbessern. In jedem Fall ist es keine Raketenwissenschaft. Hab keine Angst!

What you need:

No or not much money!

You need a few physical basic components, which you might already have. If you don't have them, don't worry! Once again: you don't need (much) money to get started. If you need any component, maybe you could lend it from anybody. I am sure when you have fire in your thoughts a good friends or your dad will help you out and maybe lend you this or that component.

Kein oder nicht viel Geld!

Du brauchst ein paar physische Grundkomponenten, die du vielleicht schon hast. Wenn du sie nicht hast, mach dir keine Sorgen! Noch einmal: du brauchst nicht (viel) Geld, um anzufangen. Wenn du irgendwelche Komponenten brauchst, kannst du sie dir vielleicht von jemandem leihen. Ich bin sicher, wenn du Feuer im Kopf hast, wird dir ein guter Freund oder dein Vater helfen und dir vielleicht dieses oder jenes Teil leihen.

Vinyl or digital?

DJing is mostly done digital nowadays. Yes, there are still some purists, but if you start today, the best and most versatile way you can go is digital. This is the way where you don't have to spend a ton of money within your start too. Digital means you will likely need a computer/laptop/iPad. Or even your phone might be enough to start DJing! There are some DJ controller where have a whole operating system included - so you don't need an extra computer. But for testing out your new hobby, I don't would recommend buying such a expensive system. Let's assume you are thoughtful and like to test out DJing and don't like to waste a ton of money if you don't stick to it.

But if you like to spend money:

Check your needs, do your research and buy the best quality you can afford. A 700 USD DJ controller doesn't mean a 400 model couldn't be better for your needs. Plus, be aware: a high-prize controller likes to live in a (flight-)case when you are thinking about to leave your bedroom. A dust cover for your home - every towel can serve as substitution for a dedicated plastic dust cover - can do a good job, too. But no bagpack can do the job of a firm (flight-)case. I personally never fly with my equipment but have to transport them in cars. And yes, flight-cases can be heavy and expensive. But when you own gear in worth of X you could think that a solid protection for 200 bucks may be worth it.

Sure, expensive controllers can offer more features and often have better sound components. And more features can be more fun to work with and enhance your session. But I never would recommend to buy a top-notch model for a beginner. If money doesn't count, okay, do what you want - but do your research before; there are significant differences! And my 1700 USD Numark NS7 had more bugs and I returned him and use a 700 USD model (MC6000 MK2) from Denon DJ nowadays. He is smaller - good for a mobile DJ. Do I miss all this hyper functions? Sometimes. But what I really need is a reliable work horse with solid quality. Not a buggy piece of tech which leaves me alone during a session. However: do your research. There is enough info out there about every price range.

Hint: Nothing sounds better when more LEDs are built-in.

Vinyl oder digital?

DJing wird heutzutage hauptsächlich digital betrieben. Ja, es gibt immer noch einige Puristen, aber wenn du heute anfängst, ist der beste und vielseitigste Weg, den du gehen kannst, digital. Das ist auch der Weg, bei dem man nicht gleich zu Beginn viel Geld ausgeben muss. Digital bedeutet, dass Sie wahrscheinlich einen Computer/Laptop/iPad benötigen. Aber auch dein Handy kann ausreichen, um mit dem DJing zu beginnen! Es gibt einige DJ-Controller, die ein komplettes Betriebssystem enthalten - du brauchst also keinen zusätzlichen Computer. Aber um dein neues Hobby auszuprobieren, würde ich nicht empfehlen, ein so teures System zu kaufen. Nehmen wir an, du bist bedacht und möchtest das DJing ausprobieren und möchtest nicht viel Geld verschwenden, wenn du nicht dabei bleibst.

Aber wenn du gerne Geld ausgibst:

Überprüfe deine Bedürfnisse, stelle Nachforschungen an und kaufe die beste Qualität, die du dir leisten kannst. Ein DJ-Controller, der 700 USD kostet, bedeutet nicht, dass ein 400er-Modell für deine Bedürfnisse nicht besser sein könnte. Außerdem solltest du dir bewusst sein, dass ein hochpreisiger Controller gerne in einem (Flight-)Case lebt, wenn du daran denkst, dein Schlafzimmer zu verlassen. Eine Staubschutzhülle für die Wohnung - jedes Handtuch kann als Ersatz für eine spezielle Plastik-Staubschutzhülle dienen - kann ebenfalls gute Dienste leisten. Aber kein Rucksack kann die Aufgabe eines festen (Flug-)Koffers übernehmen. Ich persönlich fliege nie mit meiner Ausrüstung, aber ich muss sie im Auto transportieren. Und ja, Flight-Cases können schwer und teuer sein. Aber wenn man eine Ausrüstung im Wert von X besitzt, könnte man meinen, dass ein solider Schutz für 200 Dollar es wert sein könnte.

Sicher, teure Controller können mehr Funktionen bieten und haben oft bessere Soundkomponenten. Und mehr Funktionen können mehr Spaß bei der Arbeit machen und deine Session verbessern. Aber ich würde nie empfehlen, ein Spitzenmodell für einen Anfänger zu kaufen. Wenn Geld keine Rolle spielt, okay, dann mach was du willst - aber recherchiere vorher; es gibt erhebliche Unterschiede! Und mein 1700 USD teurer Numark NS7 hatte mehr Fehler und ich habe ihn zurückgegeben und benutze jetzt ein 700 USD teures Modell (MC6000 MK2) von Denon DJ. Er ist kleiner - gut für einen mobilen DJ. Vermisse ich all diese Hyperfunktionen? Manchmal schon. Aber was ich wirklich brauche, ist ein zuverlässiges Arbeitspferd mit solider Qualität. Kein fehlerhaftes Stück Technik, das mich während einer Session im Stich lässt. Wie auch immer: Recherchiere. Es gibt genug Infos über jede Preisklasse.

Tipp: Nichts klingt besser, wenn mehr LEDs eingebaut sind.

Headphones

You need to have headphones to listen to your audio before your listeners do so - for example you like to search a track and want to listen into the start. Or you want to check cue-/memory-points or the end of the current playing to track to have a clue how you like to finish the current song or mix the next one in.

Yes, in some situation you can DJ without headphones - but to be honest: you will need a pair to do what you have to do as a DJ. Only girls bith bikinis can DJ hands free and without headphones... The headphones don't have to be a pro model in studio quality, wireless or with fancy foldable ears. Every pair of headphone will do the job for your start.

But if you do plan to spend money...

If you really think about to buy them, buy quality. Beside headphones from the known DJ brands (where I don't have much experience with), there are the ultimate Beyerdynamic DT 770. These will cost over 100 bucks, but are the reference in neutral sounding, you will find them in every music studio (because of their neutral sound) and you are able to repair single components in 10 or 20 years. And they are loud enough. My recommmendation: If you buy headphones, buy Beyerdynamic DT 770 (closed/capsulated model - best for DJing and not spreading the sound into the world). Check out the Ohm number - likely you will prefer the 80 Ohm variant - but this depends how you want to use your headphones mainly.

And if you don't stick to DJing, you always have "the best" headphones to listen to your music. podcasts or your guided meditations. I can promise you (and everyone where I recommended these headphones agreed after buying/using): you will love them - even if you don't DJ. Their sound is world-class studio reference for a unbeatable price.

I have to say a word about wireless headphones: most wireless headphones are not meant for DJs because of the to big latency. If you think you like/need wireless headphones, buy models which are meant for DJs and use the newest Bluetooth standard with according low latency.

Kopfhörer

Du brauchst einen Kopfhörer, um deine Audiodaten zu hören, bevor deine Zuhörer dies tun - zum Beispiel, wenn du einen Titel suchst und in den Anfang hineinhören willst. Oder du willst Cue-/Memory-Punkte oder das Ende des aktuell gespielten Tracks überprüfen, um einen Anhaltspunkt zu haben, wie du den aktuellen Song beenden oder den nächsten hineinmischen möchtest.

Ja, in manchen Situationen kann man auch ohne Kopfhörer auflegen - aber mal ehrlich: Für das, was man als DJ tun muss, braucht man ein Paar. Nur Frauen in Bikinis können freihändig und ohne Kopfhörer auflegen... Der Kopfhörer muss kein Profimodell in Studioqualität, kabellos oder mit schicken, faltbaren Ohren sein. Jeder Kopfhörer reicht für den Anfang aus.

Aber wenn du vorhast, Geld auszugeben...

Wenn du wirklich darüber nachdenkst, sie zu kaufen, dann kaufe Qualität. Neben den Kopfhörern der bekannten DJ-Marken (mit denen ich nicht viel Erfahrung habe), gibt es den ultimativen Beyerdynamic DT 770. Diese kosten zwar über 100 Dollar, sind aber die Referenz in Sachen neutraler Klang, man findet sie in jedem Musikstudio (wegen ihres neutralen Klangs) und man kann einzelne Komponenten in 10 oder 20 Jahren reparieren. Und sie sind laut genug. Meine Empfehlung: Wenn du Kopfhörer kaufst, kaufe Beyerdynamic DT 770 (geschlossenes/gekapseltes Modell - am besten zum DJing und um den Klang nicht in die Welt hinauszutragen). Prüfe die Ohm-Zahl - wahrscheinlich wirst du die 80-Ohm-Variante bevorzugen - aber das hängt davon ab, wie du deinen Kopfhörer hauptsächlich benutzen willst.

Und wenn du nicht als DJ auflegst, hast du immer „die besten“ Kopfhörer, um deine Musik, Podcasts oder deine geführten Meditationen zu hören. Ich kann dir versprechen (und jeder, dem ich diese Kopfhörer empfohlen habe, hat nach dem Kauf/Benutzung zugestimmt): Du wirst sie lieben - auch wenn du nicht auflegst. Ihr Klang ist Weltklasse-Studioreferenz zu einem unschlagbaren Preis.

Ein Wort noch zu den kabellosen Kopfhörern: Die meisten kabellosen Kopfhörer sind wegen der zu großen Latenz nicht für DJs geeignet. Wenn du glaubst, dass du kabellose Kopfhörer magst/brauchst, kaufe Modelle, die für DJs gedacht sind und den neuesten Bluetooth-Standard mit entsprechend niedriger Latenz verwenden.

Speakers

Any kind of speakers will do the job for your start. For sure it is more fun when you have the blast of a dedicated 1000 watt PA in your room, but if you still don't have dedicates speakers, your laptop sound-system, old computer monitors or your whatever will do the job, too. Your focus has to be: how can I get started?

Small hint: PA systems (PA means "Public Address" - it includes your mixer/amp and the speakers) needs to be driven at a appropriate volume level. Means: if you have a 1000 or 3000 watt amp/speaker, but have to use them on the minimum volume level in your house, the cone can't work like he should - a poor sound experience is the result. Buy speakers that fits your needs! And watts don't mean everything. Look at really expensive BOSE high-end speakers. They can be loud as you like and have a superior sound quality, but can have just 5 or 16 watt per speaker. But I tell you too: since I have a 700 watt PA system in my room my studio monitors are off when I DJ at home.

But if you do plan to spend money...

Check your needs! When you play most often at your own 4 walls or at small locations (where you maybe don't bring your speakers at all), it might be better to buy active studio monitors or small active PA speakers. Don't buy Hi-Fi. Buy (active) studio monitors or active PA. Hi-Fi colors your sound to make it best sounding for regular listeners. But this colored sound is not the truth. If you do music, buy studio gear/monitors for your home usage. Yes, studio monitors aren't meant to have a hard rowdie life, but if you handle them with care, you can take them to every place within your first time. I had a pair of really the most cheap studio monitors you can get - but everywhere I brought them (without a dedicated sub!) I got the feedback "Great sound!"

To be honest: now I own an active 700 watt system from JBL and yes... they sound better and I will never again brought my studio monitors to a location... But for a affordable start?

In my opinion the best is: have your studio monitors at home and your PA ready to load into your car. Do you need a big PA for every venue? Maybe not. Many locations have their own PA. Especially clubs. And if you really should need to bring a PA, you could hire one too. This makes much more sense than having a PA and use them twice a year. But let's be honest: a 15 inch PA from a quality brand, maybe plus a 18 inch sub rocks! But this all depends where you live, on the size of your location and which genre you play.

There are some rules how many watt you need for which location size indoor or outdoor. And some DJs will say "better buy 12 inch tops and a 18 inch sub, because of the 12 inch has clearer mids. I have 15 inch tops, because a high quality subwoofer from JBL (in my case/setup makes the most sense) is not cheap. And until this point I have enough punch in my sound. Believe me. Especially if you have EQs on your PA mixer. (A separate mixer might not be needed in many/most cases - don't mind about for now. I [and many mobile DJs] have one [because I am musician since many years], but as a starting DJ, don't mind about.)

Lautsprecher

Jede Art von Lautsprechern ist für den Anfang geeignet. Sicherlich macht es mehr Spaß, wenn du eine 1000-Watt-PA in deinem Raum hast. Aber wenn du noch keine eigenen Lautsprecher hast, reichen auch deine Laptop-Lautsprecher, alte Computerboxen oder was auch immer. Dein Fokus muss sein: Wie kann ich anfangen?

Kleiner Tipp: PA-Systeme (PA bedeutet "Public Address" - dazu gehören Mischpult/Verstärker und die Lautsprecher) müssen mit einem angemessenen Lautstärkepegel betrieben werden. Das bedeutet: wenn du einen 1000- oder 3000-Watt-Verstärker/Lautsprecher hast, diese aber auf der kleinsten Lautstärke in deinem Haus betreiben musst, kann die Membran nicht so arbeiten, wie sie sollte - ein schlechtes Klangerlebnis ist die Folge. Kauf dir Lautsprecher, die zu deinen Bedürfnissen passen! Und Watt ist nicht alles. Sieh dir die wirklich teuren BOSE High-End-Lautsprecher an. Sie können so laut sein, wie Sie wollen, und eine hervorragende Klangqualität haben, aber sie haben nur 5 oder 16 Watt pro Lautsprecher. Aber ich sage dir auch: Seit ich eine 700-Watt-PA-Anlage in meinem Haus habe, sind meine Studiomonitore aus, wenn ich zu Hause auflege.
