🌸Good day to all my dear friends. How are you all doing? In Sri Lanka, Lasia spinosa, commonly known as “Kohila,” is a traditional vegetable cherished for its unique taste and medicinal benefits. For generations, it has been a staple in village-style cooking, especially in dishes that highlight both nutrition and flavor. One of the most popular ways to enjoy it is in a boiled preparation, which I made today. In this method, spices and coconut oil further enhance its natural richness. Let’s take a look at how this dish is prepared.
Materials Used.
Peeled Lasia spinosa 250g. A chopped tomato. A finely chopped onion. About 4 chopped green chilli pods. Some chopped curry leaves. A little chopped garlic. 1/2 Teaspoon of turmeric powder.
Salt to taste. Coconut oil for frying. A shot of lime juice tea. 2 Teaspoon of crushed chili powder.
The cooking process as follows.
Let’s start preparing the dish. First, take the Lasia spinosa (commonly known as Kohila) and slice it thinly into long strips, as shown below.
Now, add salt and turmeric powder to the sliced Lasia spinosa and mix them well together.
Now, take a pan and add a generous amount of coconut oil. Place it on the stove and allow the oil to heat up. Once the oil is hot, add the Lasia spinosa pieces and fry them until they turn golden brown and crispy.
In the same pan, remove any excess oil and then add about one tablespoon of fresh coconut oil. Once the oil is heated, add onions, garlic, curry leaves, salt, and chili powder. Stir well until fragrant, then remove from the heat.
Next, transfer the prepared mixture into a bowl and add the fried Lasia spinosa pieces. Then, add tomato pieces, green chilies, and a little lime juice. Mix everything well to combine.
In the end, fried Lasia spinosa becomes a wholesome and flavorful dish that carries both tradition and health in every bite. Its slightly crispy texture combined with the aroma of spices makes it a perfect side dish for a warm plate of rice. More than just a meal, it represents the deep-rooted culinary heritage of Sri Lankan kitchens, offering a nourishing and satisfying experience for the whole family.
