Yesterday in a coffee shop, I overheard a woman on her phone tell someone “you’re a big-brained mullet.”

RFK Jr. Gets a Bipartisan Torching
Facing hostile questions from senators in both parties, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. dug in Thursday on some of his most controversial actions since taking office in February, fiercely interrupting senators on both sides to push back on their onslaught… Eleven of the 13 Democrats on the Senate Finance Committee called for Kennedy to resign or be fired before the hearing even began, a very clear signal about how contentious the session was going to be. And it then lived up to that preview, with Kennedy and numerous senators getting into angry exchanges… Yet Kennedy continued to push conspiracy theories about the Covid-19 vaccine, spurring sharp criticism from even Republican senators.

Trump Claims the Power to Summarily Kill Suspected Drug Smugglers
By ordering the U.S. military to summarily kill a group of people aboard what he said was a drug-smuggling boat, President Trump used the military in a way that had no clear legal precedent or basis. Mr. Trump is claiming the power to shift maritime counterdrug efforts from law enforcement rules to wartime rules. The police arrest criminal suspects for prosecution and cannot instead simply gun suspects down, except in rare circumstances where they pose an imminent threat to someone. By contrast, in armed conflicts, troops can lawfully kill enemy combatants on sight. Because killing people is so extreme — and doing it without due process risks killing the wrong people by mistake — the question of which rules apply is not simply a matter of policy choice.
D.C. Attorney General Sues Over National Guard Troops
The District of Columbia’s attorney general said that he was suing to end the deployment of the National Guard in Washington, two days after a federal judge ruled the Trump administration’s use of troops in Los Angeles had been unlawful.

Trump May Ban Transgender People from Owning Guns
In the wake of the Minneapolis Catholic church shooting, senior Justice Department officials are weighing proposals to limit transgender people’s right to possess firearms. Such a move would represent a dramatic escalation of the Trump administration’s fight against the rights of transgender Americans.
Oh, I’d love to hear the arguments in favor of this from MAGA 2A-purists.
Trump to rebrand Defense Department as War Department
President Donald Trump is expected to rename the Defense Department to the Department of War through an executive order Friday, a move that the administration has said more accurately reflects the mission of the men and women serving in uniform today. But it was not clear if the president could unilaterally rename the department, which was created by Congress in 1789, as each iteration of its name has come about through legislation.

Incoming Democrats Could Force Epstein Vote
Up to now, the focus on Capitol Hill has been on which Republicans might buck President Trump and GOP leaders and endorse a procedural tool, known as a discharge petition, to force that proposal to the floor even over the objections of Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA). The effort, sponsored by Rep. >Thomas Massie (R-KY), has the support of 216 lawmakers — two shy of the number needed to compel the vote. But there are currently four vacant seats in the House, and three of them cover deep blue districts where the Democrat is expected to prevail in special elections slated for later this year. Two of those elections will happen this month, and both of the Democratic candidates are vowing to sign the petition as soon as they arrive on Capitol Hill — enough to hit the magical 218 number required to force the Epstein bill to the floor.

Mitch McConnell may be a fossil, but even he’s occasionally correct: McConnell Likens This Period to the 1930s
“I think this is the most dangerous period since before World War II. There’s certain similarities right now to the 30s.” “Herbert Hoover signed the Smoot-Hawley tariff bill in 1930, widely believed by historians and economists to have taken the depression worldwide. Those who were totally anxious to stay out of all of what was going on in Europe were called ‘America First’. Sound familiar?”

The White House has targeted opponents, including a Fed governor, for having more than one primary residence on their loan papers. In one case, a Trump cabinet secretary got two such mortgages in quick succession. Underscoring how common the practice is, ProPublica found that at least three of Trump’s Cabinet members call multiple homes their primary residences on mortgages.

How a SEAL Team 6 Mission Into North Korea Fell Apart
The mission had the potential to provide the United States with a stream of valuable intelligence. But it meant putting American commandos on North Korean soil — a move that, if detected, not only could sink negotiations but also could lead to a hostage crisis or an escalating conflict with a nuclear-armed foe. It was so risky that it required the president’s direct approval. For the operation, the military chose SEAL Team 6’s Red Squadron — the same unit that killed Osama bin Laden. The SEALs rehearsed for months, aware that every move needed to be perfect. But when they reached what they thought was a deserted shore that night, wearing black wet suits and night-vision goggles, the mission swiftly unraveled. A North Korean boat appeared out of the dark. Flashlights from the bow swept over the water. Fearing that they had been spotted, the SEALs opened fire. Within seconds, everyone on the North Korean boat was dead. The SEALs retreated into the sea without planting the listening device.
