El increíble crecimiento de China en las últimas décadas, nos hace olvidar que en realidad muchas personas tuvieron que pasar de vivir en aldeas a ciudades en muy poco tiempo, a su vez, que no hace mucho, grandes restricciones, como la política del hijo unico o las restricciones a la inmigracion interna, todavia eran absolutas.

En la primera mitad del libro, veremos como el nacimiento de Karoline fue casi un milagro, pues ella es la 2da hija, y cuenta cómo su madre sorteó la prohibición de tenerla. A su vez, veremos su mudanza de su original aldea a una pequeña ciudad, y las concesiones que tenían que hacer para ser aceptados. En la otra mitad del libro, veremos a la autora contar la experiencia de ingresar a la universidad, concretar su vocación, experimentar el amor y en especial su creciente desapego a aceptar las “verdades” de las autoridades chinas.
In the first half of the book, we see how Karoline's birth was almost a miracle, as she is the second daughter, and how her mother circumvented the ban on having her. We also see her move from her original village to a small town, and the concessions they had to make to be accepted. In the second half of the book, we see the author recount her experience of entering university, finding her vocation, experiencing love, and, in particular, her growing detachment from accepting the “truths” of the Chinese authorities.
Es un libro fácil de leer y podría ser casi una novela. Si te interesa conocer lo que significo estas últimas décadas de desarrollo en China para el ciudadano común, aquí hay un profundo e interesante testimonio.
It is an easy read and could almost be a novel. If you are interested in learning what the last few decades of development in China have meant for ordinary citizens, here is a profound and interesting testimony.
