sweet japonica
scents the night air
I should be drowsy
I am wide awake
wondering where you are
if you will be with me soon
you stand on a clifftop
looking out over a desert vista
the air is dry; the sage is crisp
succulents hold a promise
the quench to your thirst
you stand on ship’s deck
looking out to the horizon
the water is choppy and purple
in the twilight, in the crepuscular
the soft glint and din of loam and splash
act a siren’s call, a call to the comfort of land
you float in space
out there and alone, cold
minuscule in insurmountable space
decaying in the burning solar
look away and back
flares redirect you to a temperate orbit
sweet japonica
scents the night air
I should be drowsy
I am wide awake
beating, pulsing, breathing
slowly floating upon the rigid tectonic
wondering where you are
if you will be with me soon

This past July we headed south for a road trip, but given how far North we are, it wasn't all that south. You are looking at the Athabasasca river in the photo above. Athabasca, the town, hosts the Athabascas University. It's campus is tidy but small, as most of the courses are offered online. The campus is however big enough to support a delightful riverside town. We couldn't stay for more than an hour or so, but this is definitely a place I would like to visit again.
The photo to the side is of another small town we drove through. It's name totally slipped my mind, but I found the advertising flip sign out front a wonderful looking Eastern Orthodox church to be a bit of an oddity. I feel like there is a human story behind this that I would love to know.
The picture below is the world's large Pysanka, you might ask. We did. Now you know. It is a Ukrainian easter egg and the biggest can be found, slowly rotating, in Vegreville Alberta. I am sure you will be contacting your travel agent to book a trip, immediately after reading my blog:)

We moved a little further south to central Alberta and the World Famous Gopher Museum.

This is my second visit to Torrington and its museum. If you like kitsch and Candiana, you will love this place. Even if this those are not your things, you will never forget this visit. Go:) Below is the picture of the scenery from Torrington, which isn't bad either:)
