When it comes to memorizing songs, I don't stress much before having all the lyrics and the rhythm in my head, as long as it's a song I feel. So, if I were to say what songs I've memorized, the list would be infinite.
I'm a lover of blues, both foreign and Nigerian, and I have lots of favorite artists. For the love of RnB, I fell in love with 2face Idibia, a Nigerian musician and I know and memorized almost all his songs. But there's a particular one I didn't really feel at first because it wasn't about love, but that day I took my time to listen to the lyrics and felt a deep connection with the song.
The song is titled "Oh Papa" and it preaches about not putting your trust in humans but in God. The lyrics go like this.
"Why do people keep saying What they don't really mean Like when they tell you say I'm sorry They only really want you to forget Making empty promises That they cannot fulfill Like when it comes to really watching your back They just can't go for life What it is I'm saying That you do not understand Are you part of the game Or is it that you are just part of the plan Who should I believe in Or should I just blank? Like when they talk about a perfect world I just say it's not going to be my generation
So right now how I feel inside is what Imma told you, what exactly how I am feeling within Right now I put the whole of my trust on only one being And that is the Almighty. Holy Father lay your hand on me And guide me and protect me from all me enemies
That's why I say, oh papa You are the one that I cannot mess with I say, oh papa You are the one that gives me what to eat I say, oh papa Make me man a free and you stand me on me feet And that is the reason Why I am crying unto you right now Oh papa eh eh Eledumare.........
It's quite long, so I'll have to pause here.
Truly, around that time, I had so many betrayals, and that was the very first time I took my time to memorize all the lyrics in the song. That's the song I use to calm myself whenever I feel betrayed.
