Last weekend, I attended a gathering of artists at the La Pastora Parish in Caracas, Venezuela. The event took place very close to the Arturo Michelena Museum, which recently underwent a major restoration. Having never visited it before, I took the opportunity to go inside and learn about the interior of this majestic temple, which at one point in history was the home and workshop of the master artist Arturo Michelena.
El fin de semana pasado asistí a un encuentro de dibujantes en la parroquia la Pastora en la ciudad de Caracas, Venezuela; la actividad se llevó a cabo muy cerca del museo Arturo Michelena que hace poco tiempo recibió una gran restauración, como nunca lo había visitado aproveche la ocasión para entrar y conocer lo que resguarda en su interior este majestuoso templo que en algún momento de la historia fue la casa y el taller de creación del maestro artista plástico Arturo Michelena.

During his lifetime, the master painter Michelena purchased this property in La Pastora upon his return to Venezuela after having achieved success with his art in Paris. His idea was to build a large studio that would allow him to create large-format works while also providing a space to dedicate himself to teaching art.
En vida, el maestro pintor Michelena compro esta propiedad en la Pastora luego de su regreso a Venezuela después de haber triunfado con su arte en Paris. Su idea era construir un gran taller que le permitiera crear obras en grandes formatos y al mismo tiempo tener un espacio para dedicarse a la enseñanza del arte.

Sadly, Maestro Michelena died at the young age of 35, a victim of tuberculosis. His death left his work unfinished and his house without the purpose he had intended. His wife, Lastenia Tello de Michelena, dedicated herself to preserving his legacy. She donated the house to the Venezuelan government to become a safe haven for his works and personal belongings.
Lamentablemente, el maestro Michelena falleció a la temprana edad de 35 años siendo víctima de la tuberculosis; su muerte dejo su obra inconclusa y a su casa sin el propósito que él le había otorgado. Su esposa Lastenia Tello de Michelena se dedicó a preservar su legado, ella dono la casa al Estado venezolano para que se convirtiera en un lugar de resguardo para sus obras y objetos personales.
The property, already established as a museum, opened its doors to the public on June 16, 1963. Since then, the facility has been dedicated to the exhibition, conservation, and dissemination of Michelena's artistic legacy. On March 31, 1977, the late 18th-century house that houses the museum was declared a National Historic Landmark, recognizing its cultural and historical value. In 2024, the museum underwent a major restoration and reopened to the public.
La propiedad ya establecida como museo abrió sus puertas al público el 16 de junio de 1963, desde ese momento, el recinto se ha dedicado a la exhibición, conservación y difusión del legado artístico de Michelena. El 31 de marzo de 1977, la casa que data de finales del siglo XVIII y alberga el museo fue declarada Monumento Histórico Nacional, reconociendo su valor cultural e histórico. El pasado año 2024 el museo recibió una gran restauración y reinauguración al público.
Today, the Arturo Michelena Museum not only permanently displays a collection of the painter's canvases, sketches, drawings, and personal belongings, but also serves as an active cultural center. It frequently hosts temporary exhibitions of other artists, offers workshops on drawing and other artistic expressions, and offers community activities. The museum is a living testament to the talent of one of Venezuela's greatest painters and a vital space for culture in the La Pastora parish.
En la actualidad, el Museo Arturo Michelena no solo exhibe de forma permanente una colección de lienzos, bocetos, dibujos y objetos personales del pintor, sino que también sirve como un centro cultural activo; con frecuencia se realizan exposiciones temporales de otros artistas, se imparten talleres de dibujo y otras expresiones artísticas, y se ofrecen actividades para la comunidad. El museo es un testimonio vivo del talento de uno de los más grandes pintores de Venezuela y un espacio vital para la cultura en la parroquia La Pastora.

I loved learning about the history of this museum, and being inside knowing that maestro Michelena was there working on his pieces, that he painted one of his most acclaimed works there, "Miranda in the Carrack," is a very gratifying feeling. Conocer la historia de este museo me encanto y estar ahí dentro sabiendo que el maestro Michelena estuvo allí trabajando en sus obras, que allí pinto una de sus más aclamadas obras el cuadro de "Miranda en la carraca" es una sensación muy gratificante; a todo el que se encuentre en la capital del país y tenga la oportunidad de visitar el museo y les apasione el arte, les aseguro que lo van a disfrutar.
