This town looks us by surprise. We had driven down through the mountains and forests, and Boullion was sort of at the end of that stretch.
We'd never heard of it before and thought we'd just crash here for the night and move on in the morning.
As we approached and started looking for places to stay, we found a spot online which was described as looking over the castle. As Castle Lovers, we were more than happy to give it a go.
We made our way over an old bridge and parked up with the view in image 2 - Looking over the River at this stunning, lush green view with a castle high on the skyline, with bridges connecting the different sections of the castle. Almost looked like a fairy tale castle, minus a large turret and a princess with long hair flowing down.
We decided to go for a walk into the town itself as it was approaching late afternoon and we didn't want to miss the shops if there were any. To enter the town you walk through a tunnel which as been dug through the bedrock the castle or chateux it sits on. When you came out the other side it was if you were teleported through.
On the way we also found another GeoCache which I was very pleased with as I was only a few meters away from where I turned the app on to look =D
After the teleport through the tunnel we were presented with a beautiful laid out town on the banks of the River Semois. It was clearly a tourist town as lots of the restaurants were not open in the mid week due to low numbers and of course its out of season.
However, we did find a lovely cafe to drink a Hot Chocolate, aka Chocolat Chaud- the lady working was ever so kind and made sure Lino had some fresh water to drink.
What we also didn't know at the time was how many walking routes start in Boullion, it is a real hiking hotspot with trails starting all over the town with well laid out markers. So if you're a walker and looking for somewhere to visit then I highly recommend Boullion as I imagine in the Summer months the place us bustling hive off activity with a lovely atmosphere albeit I imagine a bit busy on some of the days.
After walking back to Larry the Van, all 3 of us Sat by the bench and Sion and Myself shared a page each of the Sketchpad and loosely drew what was in front of us until the bats came out.
The Bridge was lit up at night as well with graphics displayed from a projector which changed every so many seconds it was really effective.
The following morning we discovered a free motorhome aire just 5 minutes from us and a nature spot in a meadow next to the River which would have been nice to stay at but we were more than happy with our Castle View.
We also met a couple from the Netherlands in their Motorhome and we chatted over a cup of tea. They offered us some Beer they no longer wanted and we offered them some homemade Jam we brought with us. These interactions are what make travelling, in my opinion.
**Interesting non fact ** - Bouillon is not where Bouillon powder comes from did a google of this already!
