As I sit down to journal my thoughts and feelings right now, I can’t help but be overwhelmed by a sense of sadness and frustration. While I rarely use social media, occasionally I like staying informed about current events and I recently came across about the mining activities on the Island of Homonhon, the place where I spent some of my most formative years with my grandparents, has left me feeling deeply unsettled.
The reports of the environmental damage, displacement of communities, and exploitation of natural resources on the island have hit me hard. It’s hard to reconcile the idyllic memories I have of Homonhon with the stark reality of what is happening there now. It’s heartbreaking to think of the impact that these mining activities are having on the land, the people, and the wildlife that call Homonhon home.
The reason for our great concern lies not only in safeguarding the environment and the residents but also in recognizing its historical significance as the initial landing spot of the Spanish explorer Ferdinand Magellan in March 1521. The Island’s stunning natural beauty, featuring unspoiled beaches and clear waters, as well as its abundant marine biodiversity make it a truly special place. Additionally, Homonhon Island’s rich cultural heritage further highlights why it is worth preserving
Captured a couple of years ago when I visited the island.
I reached out to a friend who also grew up on the island, and we shared our feelings of helplessness and anger about the situation. We both agreed that something needs to be done, but we also realized that as individuals, it can be challenging to make a significant impact. The mining activities on Homonhon are being carried out by powerful companies with the support of the government, and it’s not clear how we as concerned citizens, can effectively advocate for change.
Given the multitude of responsibilities such as daily life and caring for our son, finding the time to learn more about the problem and be involved with an environmental group on social media since I currently reside abroad can be daunting. I need to carefully consider how to integrate these actions into my existing schedule and priorities before fully committing to a new project.
So as I close this journal entry, I will leave you with the following question, "How do you integrate actions that make a positive impact on the environment into your day-to-day life?"
