Hey Draw a Day community
Here are the winners of our latest contest, Sketch Quest August version 2. Thank you to all of you creative members who shared your amazing work. It was so inspiring to see the different stories and scenes you captured.
I had a nice quiet time judging the entries and had fun myself indulging in these beautiful pieces, and here's a breakdown of how each one stacked up against our criteria:
Grand Winner: Laundry Day by @tita-annie
This one is absolutely fantastic and checks every box.
Creativity (40%): The idea of a rat doing laundry is incredibly unique and charming. Taking a mundane, everyday task and turning it into a cute, relatable scene. The perspective and the deliberate looseness of the lines are very creative choices.
Inspiration Story (30%): The caption is a personal, humorous, and relatable story. The artist connects the rat's chore to her own life, explaining the intentional blurriness of everyday survival. The sketch was brought to life in a powerful way.
Effort (30%): The sketch, while loose, shows artistic skill and intent. The details on the rat's face, the textures of the shirt and the machine, and the overall composition show that this was a thoughtful piece of work. The effort isn't just in the drawing, but in the conceptualization as well.
2nd Place: Ruinenlust by @nestodibuja
This entry shows a thoughtful, skilled approach.
Creativity (40%): The concept of drawing an abandoned place for aesthetic reason fits the "ruinenlust" theme perfectly. Using different types of lines and hatchings is a creative choice that shows a deep understanding of sketching.
Inspiration Story (30%): The caption explains the artist's learning process and the specific artistic choices made, like using different line techniques. The explanation of the German word "Ruinenlust" adds interest and shows the artist's personal connection to the subject.
Effort (30%): The detailed lines and hatching show a dedication, passion and high level of skill. The focus on technique and application of what the artist has been learning is a clear sign of effort.
3rd Place: A Cabin in the Pines by @hazgruh
This sketch effectively captures a mood.
Creativity (40%): The focus on a feeling about warmth and peace within a cold landscape is a creative approach. The contrast between the cold snowy scene and the warm smoke from the chimney is a powerful visual idea.
Inspiration Story (30%): The caption is well-written and does a great job of conveying the feeling the artist wanted to capture. It's a simple yet effective story that makes you feel the coziness of the cabin.
Effort (30%): This piece is well-executed. The rendering of the snow, the trees, and the cabin all show skill. The lighting effect from the chimney is a subtle but impactful detail that shows a good amount of effort.
Notable Participation: All the other sketches were fantastic entries and are absolutely worth celebrating
@urbanwalker "By the Bay" The use of a simple urban landscape at dusk is a great choice that creates a calm mood. The caption is good and clearly states the inspiration of an "almost night ocean side scene." The sketch captures the mood of the scene well with its simple lines and urban details.
@tinster "Weekend At The Park" The idea of a picnic at the park is a nice concept. The choice to include small, detailed stories within the larger scene is very creative. The caption is incredibly detailed and personal. It really brings the sketch to life by describing the stories behind each character. The small details like the sleeping dad and the lonely woman make the drawing feel real. This sketch is filled with intricate details, which shows a huge amount of effort and passion.
@steembake "Walking with Pets" This sketch captures a simple, everyday moment that many people can relate to. It's a sweet and classic theme. The caption describes a familiar and relaxing scene, which is a great inspiration for a sketch. The lines are clean and the overall composition is balanced. It's a nice, simple sketch that still shows a good level of effort.
