HISTORIES: THE FIGHT AGAINST FACTS AND FICTION…

History is a subject i was never taught in high school. If only we had a history teacher in my high school, do you think i would have loved history as a favorite subject or hated it for a couple of reasons. Honestly, I think i would have loved history as a favorite subject in high school, and that’s because i find histories and stories very interesting, especially when it’s been taught or told to me by an experienced individual. For the historical events that has happened many years ago in my country or in the world at large, i have always loved hearing it directly from the elders in the family, or from any oldie who has witnessed it happen with their two eyes. What you witness, that is, what you see with your eyes stays longer in your memory than that which you hear from others…

Although i was never opportuned to take history as either a subject in school or a course in the tertiary institution, but thanks to subjects like CIVIC EDUCATION and GOVERNMENT, that gap was filled. I was able to learn many things about my country and that of others from my teachers. Although till today i still sometimes question the historical events told to me by teachers in school, and thats because majority of them didn’t witness all these events happen with their own eyes. They were also taught all these by someone like them many years ago, both with the aid of the web and written textbooks. I still prefer hearing directly how any major historical event unfolded in the past from the ELDERS, especially those who were born during the time of the Colonial masters. I’m talking about the elders that witnessed how we were colonized by the British many decades ago. Historical events narrated by them are just the best piece…

The best aspect of learning anything historical has always been the knowledge and experience that is derived from it. The only issue i have with histories is the exact time it happened, which brings me to this particular angle. I loved government and civic education growing up, but when it comes to historical events and the years they happened, I’d rather prefer being told about the event without you telling me the year it happened. This is because histories are defined by the year they occurred, and we have lots of historical events in Nigeria, how do you expect me to memorize all these years without misplacing A for B and C for D, that’s where I started having issues with anything about histories…

Honestly, when it comes to histories and the tellers, I don’t really know what to believe, including when it comes from both the elders who have witnessed it happen and those who read it on the web and in textbooks. The truth about this whole history thing is that there’s always that ONE thing they aren’t telling us. Most historians tell stories from their point of view and not really from how it occurred, I believe most of the histories out there are quite edited. I don’t even know what to believe anymore. Even what is on the web was written by someone. It would have been better to witness it with my own eyes, that way i’d be able to tell which is which later on in the future…

These stories only favor those who tell them and that’s one thing I’m very sure of. Honestly, i have never been too good with historical events. I love hearing them but don’t really like to keep them in my head because this is something that was told to me and not something i witnessed with my own two eyes. So when it comes histories that are totally wrong and everyone believes are right, I don’t know any, and that’s because I don’t completely believe histories. I am not a historian, so I don’t really know much about it, i just listen to provide answers to questions, and when i’m asked for proof, i dig out where my answers were gotten from and provide them…

At the end of the day, people only believe that which they want to believe, regardless of how the picture is being painted and presented. No one can force you to believe what you don’t want to believe. It has always been the same with histories…
