Hoy fue un día diferente y lleno de colores en el cielo de Caldas, Antioquia. Tuve la oportunidad de disfrutar una hermosa actividad: volar cometas, o como les decimos en Venezuela, papagayos. Desde que llegué al lugar, me llamó la atención cómo no solo era un espacio para los adultos, sino también para los niños, con áreas especiales donde ellos podían correr libres y levantar sus cometas sin peligro.
El cielo se vestía con una variedad impresionante de diseños: desde las clásicas cometas triangulares hasta otras más elaboradas en forma de animales, figuras geométricas y hasta personajes animados. Algunas llevaban largas colas de colores que danzaban con el viento, mientras que otras eran tan ligeras que parecían flotar sin esfuerzo.
En Caldas, esta actividad no es solo un pasatiempo, es una manera de compartir, de conectar generaciones y de celebrar la cultura. Volar cometas aquí se vive como un momento para reír, competir de manera sana y recordar que las tradiciones más simples a veces son las que más alegran el corazón.
Para quienes no lo sepan, las cometas —o papagayos— han existido desde hace siglos y tienen un significado cultural en muchos países. En Colombia, se suelen volar especialmente en agosto, cuando los vientos son más fuertes, aunque en lugares como Caldas, donde el clima es generoso, se pueden disfrutar en distintas épocas del año. Además, hay concursos y festivales que premian la creatividad y la destreza para mantenerlas en el aire.
Hoy entendí que, más allá de la técnica, lo importante es la experiencia: el momento en que la cuerda se tensa, el viento la eleva y uno siente esa mezcla de emoción y paz viendo cómo tu cometa se convierte en parte del cielo.

Today was a different day, full of colors in the sky above Caldas, Antioquia. I had the opportunity to enjoy a beautiful activity: flying kites, or as we call them in Venezuela, papagayos. From the moment I arrived, I was struck by how it was not only a space for adults, but also for children, with special areas where they could run freely and fly their kites safely.
The sky was filled with an impressive variety of designs: from classic triangular kites to more elaborate ones in the shape of animals, geometric figures, and even animated characters. Some had long colorful tails that danced in the wind, while others were so light that they seemed to float effortlessly.
In Caldas, this activity is not just a pastime, it is a way to share, connect generations, and celebrate culture. Flying kites here is experienced as a time to laugh, compete in a healthy way, and remember that the simplest traditions are sometimes the ones that bring the most joy to the heart.
For those who don't know, kites have been around for centuries and have cultural significance in many countries. In Colombia, they are usually flown in August, when the winds are strongest, although in places like Caldas, where the climate is mild, they can be enjoyed at different times of the year. There are also contests and festivals that reward creativity and skill in keeping them aloft.
Today I understood that, beyond technique, what matters is the experience: the moment when the string tightens, the wind lifts it, and you feel that mixture of excitement and peace as you watch your kite become part of the sky.
