Hoy quiero contarles sobre la vez que fui como fotógrafo independiente al evento “Del Puente al Puente” en Valdivia. Justo en ese entonces recién había llegado a vivir a esta ciudad del sur de Chile, y me enteré por redes sociales de que se realizaría este evento anual que se lleva a cabo a finales del verano.

Se trata de una competencia de aguas abiertas, en la cual nadadores de diferentes clubes y regiones de Chile se dan cita para nadar desde un puente hasta otro. Aunque no recuerdo con exactitud la distancia, calculo que fueron entre 1.5 km y 2 km de nado por el río Calle-Calle.

Me preparé desde temprano ese día y llegué antes del inicio de la competencia para documentar todo el evento con mi cámara. Realicé fotografías desde la preparación de los atletas, la emoción en sus rostros, el ambiente en la costanera y, por supuesto, durante toda la competencia mientras corría paralelo a los nadadores por la orilla para capturar cada momento.

Fue un día soleado y perfecto para este tipo de actividades al aire libre, y aunque no pude participar como nadador (ya que apenas estaba retomando mis clases de natación después de años), decidí enfocarme completamente en mi rol como fotógrafo. Pero ya tengo en mente que el próximo año, si todo se alinea, ¡me lanzo al agua!

Las fotos que presento fueron tomadas con mi fiel compañera, la Canon M50, utilizando principalmente mi lente favorito: el 50mm f/1.8. Me hubiera gustado tener un lente con más distancia, pero logré capturar imágenes llenas de vida y emoción con los recursos que tenía.

Today I want to share with you the time I worked as an independent photographer at the “From Bridge to Bridge” event in Valdivia. Back then, I had just recently moved to this beautiful southern Chilean city, and I found out through social media that this annual event would be happening at the end of summer.

It’s an open water swimming competition where athletes from various swimming clubs and regions of Chile gather to swim from one bridge to another. While I’m not sure of the exact distance, I estimate it was around 1.5 to 2 kilometers across the Calle-Calle River.

I arrived early that day to document the entire event with my camera. I took photos before, during, and shortly after the competition — capturing the atmosphere, the expressions, the excitement, and the athletes’ preparation. I even ran along the riverside to keep up with the swimmers and freeze each moment in time.

It was a sunny and beautiful day — perfect for an outdoor activity like this. Although I couldn’t swim myself (I had just resumed swimming lessons after years), I dedicated myself entirely to capturing the essence of the event. But mark my words: next year, if all goes well, I’ll be in the water too, chasing victory!

The photos were taken with my trusted Canon M50, using mainly my favorite portrait lens — the 50mm f/1.8. I would’ve loved to have a telephoto lens, but I made it work with what I had and still managed to capture powerful and vibrant images.
