There are certain kind of people, who considered themselves to be the best and noone is better than them. They always feel pride in whatever action they take. A proud individual who believes they can handle everything themselves and will not seek help or advice, which can lead to being overwhelmed by problems they can't solve alone. Ultimately, excessive pride leads to such people downfall. Citing the bitter truth of pride, Sanskrit comes up with following verses ;
जरा रूपं हरति हि धैर्यमाशां मृत्युः प्राणान् धर्मचर्यामसूया|
कामो ह्रियं वृत्तमनार्यसेवा क्रोधः श्रियं सर्वमेवाभिमानः||
Jaraa roopam harati hi dhairyamaashaa mrutyuh praanaan dharmacharyaamasooyaa. Kaamo hriyam vrattamanaaryaseva krodhh shriyam sarvamevaabhimaanah.
Jaraa = old age.
Roopam = beauty.
Harati = destroys, steals.
Dhairyamaashaa = dhairyam + aashaa.
Dhairya = patience, firmness.
Aashaa = hope.
Mrutyuh = death.
Praanaan = breath of life
Dharmacharyaamasooya = dharmacharyaam + asooyaa.
Dharmacharyam = observance of religious austerity.
Asooyaa = envy, intolerance.
Kaamo = sexuality.
Hriyam = balance of mind.
Vruttamanaaryaseva = vruttam + anaarya + seva.
Vruttam = service, job.
Anaarya = ill mannered person.
Seva = service.
Krodha = anger.
Shriyam = happiness.
Sarvamevaabhinaamanah = sarvam + aiva + abhimaanah.
Sarvam = all.
aiva = really.
Abhimaanah = arrogance, pride.
It says, Beauty is destroyed by old age, hope by patience, life by death and hatred and intolerance are destroyed by following the religion. Similarly, mental balance is destroyed by lust, job is destroyed by serving a mean and evil person, happiness is destroyed by anger and everything is destroyed by pride.
While human needs certain help in one form or other to get rid of their good/bad traits, an excessive pride simply leads them to completely destroy. Pride leads to downfall by fostering arrogance, self-centeredness, and a lack of learning, which causes individuals to push others away, ignore mistakes, and overestimate their abilities, ultimately leading to their humiliation, and a disaster.
