You Won't Believe I Traveled Here for Free in New Zealand (Part I)

Anyone can attest that one knows he's reached Rotorua once he smelled that acidic pungent smell in the air. This is pretty much true because it sits at one of the country's active geothermal regions. Science tells us that the strong smell is attributed to hydrogen sulfide concentration in the air; that's why Rotorua is dubbed as the Sulphur city.

Kuirau Park is one of the more crowded places in Rotorua, where geothermal activities can be experienced readily. I remember the feeling was ethereal surrounded by those huge gases in the air. Now, if you had enough of the strolling, you can always sit down, grab a book, or simply take in the area's serene ambiance while resting. ______________________________________________________________________________________

#2 GOVERNMENT GARDENS

 This is one of my favorite spots in the downtown area where I can quickly escape from busy streets. It sits next to government buildings, including the regional council, information site, and police headquarters. This makes me ponder how lucky those working proximately are since they got to immerse at the gardens conveniently when they need a quick breather. When I got here, the first spot I ran to was the lavender spikes right at the front. Lavenders are known to be heliophiles, and the summer apparently does good to their growth. Oh, I was so starstruck that I couldn't miss having a photo of those.  Upon entering the gate, the area truly embodies its name. There are heaps of exquisite flowers around that complement the serenity of the place.  The Government Gardens also houses the city museum; however, it is still under renovation after being massively affected by the Christchurch earthquake. But, this didn't stop me from enjoying the place still. The area is so open that the cold wind suppressed the summer heat at that time. I just got into the moment feeling the breeze, sat down, and enjoyed my quick break.  _________________________________________________________________

#3 SULFUR BAY

 A short walk away behind the Government Gardens leads you to a series of tourist destinations holed in one site. The view of manmade wetlands greets you upon entering the track. If you didn't have enough of mudpools and steaming vents at the Kuirau Park, this place is perfect for you. Going forth, parks are situated as well if you'd just like to sit down with your friends and hang out. But just go a little further, and you'll see the most majestic lakeside view in central Rotorua.

In the middle of the lake is the famous Mokoia Island. Legend has it that it was once inhabited by Tutanekai, a warrior of Te Anawa tribe, who fell in love with a lady from the mainland named Hinemoa. With the guide of lover's music, the two were able to meet eventually, and the rest was history. If fresh air does good for your mood and alleviates your stress, then definitely this a place to go. _______________________________________________________________

#4 PARKS, PARKS, AND MORE PARKS!

 You need no to go far honestly to find picturesque spots in Rotorua. Parks are strategically placed near communities where people spend leisure hours jogging, walking the pet, playing with friends and kids, or even meditating.  Parks here are vast and almost empty, which is perfect for anyone looking for peace.. and spots for candid poses. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rotorua is more than a handful for anybody, like me, who grow up in city bustles and busy streets. Definitely more peaceful and quiet but I like it that way. Especially with these stunning spots just around the corner, who wouldn't fall for it easily? In the next part of my Rotorua adventures, I'll feature, on the other hand, spots here that are situated near the countryside.
