"W XIV wieku, z inicjatywy króla Kazimierza Wielkiego, w Wieliczce wzniesiono mury obronne oraz basztę, aby chronić kopalnie soli i ich pracowników. Król polecił otoczyć miasto i zamek żupny wysokimi murami. Wzdłuż nich zbudowano 19 solidnych baszt oraz dwie baszty z bramami wjazdowymi: krakowską i kłosowską. Przez kilka wieków Wieliczka pełniła funkcję fortecy, będąc częścią systemu warownych zamków i miast, które w razie najazdów wroga zabezpieczały dostęp do stolicy państwa."
