Formula 1 - Is McLaren Ruining 2025 Drivers Championship?

English Version - Click to DisplayMcLaren is becoming utterly ridiculous with its decisions. What the hell is going on at McLaren? This season has been full of situations where you simply cannot believe the nonsense they come up with, and Monza was the last straw in all this chaos they have created with their famous “Papaya Rules” that even I laughed when they first mentioned them because they sounded like something out of a clown show to get attention, but now they're taking them to the point of absurdity where you no longer know if they're racing Formula 1 or playing at being the politically correct ones in the paddock. The problem with McLaren is very clear: they never thought Oscar Piastri would be as good as he is now. I mean, the guy comes along and practically becomes the new Kimi Raikkonen, but even more lethal because he has a car that can easily win races. So now they have the big problem that their favorite driver, Lando Norris, is no longer the only one who can win, and that has them completely lost, not knowing what to do, because obviously Norris is the investment of years at McLaren, while Piastri arrived recently, but it turns out that the Australian is a better driver than Norris, and that's something no one at McLaren wants to admit openly. At Monza, exactly what we all knew was going to happen happened. Piastri overtook Norris during the pit stops if they allowed him the undercut because Norris had a slow five-second pit stop, and then McLaren made the stupidest decision possible. They told Piastri to give the position back because “it's not fair” that Norris lost the position due to a slow pit stop. But what kind of logic is that? Haven't slow pit stops been part of racing since Formula 1 began? It's as if McLaren wanted to invent its own sport where everything has to be “fair” according to its own spoiled criteria, and the most ridiculous thing is that Piastri accepts the team's order, which is understandable because it's the first time he's led a championship, but another driver hungry to win would have told them to screw off because he did nothing wrong to lose that position.

English Version - Click to DisplayWhat bothers me most about this whole situation is McLaren's total hypocrisy because you know that if it had been the other way around, if Piastri had had the slow pit stop and Norris had moved ahead, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have made the same swap, they would have left things as they were, period. But since it's their golden boy Norris who got hurt, then they have to step in to “fix” things. It's total bullshit because they're manipulating the race results to suit themselves, and that's not sport anymore, it's theater. Andrea Stella came out to defend the decision, saying it was for the “values” of the team and all that PR bullshit, but the reality is that McLaren is lost because they don't know how to handle a situation where both of their drivers are competitive and one of them is not the one they wanted to be the star. So now they're improvising on the fly, trying to keep everyone happy, but all they're accomplishing is looking like clowns who don't know how to run a Formula 1 team. Max Verstappen laughed his head off when he heard what happened, and he's right, because no world champion driver in history would have agreed to give back a position he won fairly on the track. Verstappen himself already showed in Brazil 2022 with Checo that he doesn't give anything away to anyone when he's fighting for points, But Piastri seems more concerned with maintaining team harmony than winning the championship, and that mentality will get you nowhere in Formula 1.

English Version - Click to DisplayMcLaren's worst mistake in all this is that they are setting a very dangerous precedent for the final races of the season, because now every time something happens during a race, the drivers will be expecting the team to intervene to “correct” injustices. But what if we are in the final race in Abu Dhabi and Piastri has a slow pit stop that puts him behind Norris? are they going to ask Norris to give him back the position even if it means losing the world championship? Obviously, they're not going to do that because they know Norris is going to tell them to go screw themselves, so where is the consistency in their decisions? There isn't any because it all depends on who the affected driver is and how convenient it is for McLaren at that specific moment. Oscar Piastri showed at Monza that he has more than enough speed to win races, but he also showed that he lacks the killer instinct you need to be a world champion, because any driver with real championship ambitions would have ignored the team's orders and held on to that position no matter what, but Piastri chose to be the obedient driver who thinks about the team first and the championship second, and that mentality is exactly what is going to screw him over when the decisive races come around because Norris is not going to have the same moral scruples when he is fighting for his first world title. McLaren is playing a very dangerous game because they are trying to micromanage a championship fight, but Formula 1 does not work that way. there are things you can't control, such as slow pit stops, mechanical problems, accidents, and if every time something happens they are going to be changing positions to maintain their artificial version of “fairness,” then they'd better stick to organizing children's karting because they clearly don't understand how professional motorsport works.

English Version - Click to DisplayThe irony of all this is that McLaren has the most dominant car on the grid right now. They should be celebrating the fact that they finally have two drivers capable of winning races after years of mediocrity, But instead, they are creating unnecessary drama with their absurd policies, which will only divide the team internally when the important races come around. They should let them compete to the end, making it clear that there will be no contact, but even that is difficult. Just remember Hamilton vs. Rosberg. Piastri already said on the radio that they had agreed that slow pit stops were part of racing and that he didn't understand why they were now changing the rules. That tells you everything you need to know about the lack of communication and leadership at McLaren, the favoritism towards Norris, because if even the drivers don't know what the rules of the game are, then how can they be expected to make consistent decisions during races? And the reaction of the Italian crowd booing Norris on the podium also says a lot about how this whole circus is perceived from the outside, because even the fans realize when something is not right and when the results are being artificially manipulated. Most of those fans don't know much about Formula 1, but they can tell that there was a problem when Norris passed Piastri. obviously it gets worse when the radio is broadcast. McLaren's fundamental problem is that they are trying to have the best of both worlds. They want their drivers to race freely, but they also want to control the results when they don't suit them, and that's impossible because you can't have real freedom if you are constantly interfering with the natural consequences of that freedom. It's like playing poker but changing the cards every time you don't like your hand. It just doesn't work that way.

English Version - Click to DisplayAt the end of the day, McLaren will have to decide whether they really want to let Piastri and Norris fight for the championship like grown men or whether they are going to continue treating them like children who need Daddy McLaren to solve all their problems, because the way they are handling things now is only going to create more problems and more controversy in the remaining races. Be careful, Piastri could be a time bomb, and he could crash into Norris's car just like Verstappen did to Hamilton. What I mean is that Norris has already shown that he is not capable, but we have not yet seen Piastri lose his patience. Verstappen took the win at Monza by doing exactly what McLaren should be doing: focusing on winning races without getting involved in stupid internal drama. And while Red Bull is celebrating its first victory since Christian Horner left, McLaren is wasting time arguing about whether a slow pit stop counts as “unfair” or not. That's the difference between a team that understands how this sport works and another that is completely lost in its own made-up rules. If McLaren continues down this path, they will end up giving away the championship because they are more concerned with appearing “fair” than with winning races, and when that happens, they will have no one to blame but themselves for turning Formula 1 into a reality show of family drama instead of real sporting competition. Can you imagine Verstappen gaining points because McLaren gets a couple of DNFs because one of the two drivers loses his temper in the race because of this show? This is Formula 1, where ANYTHING is possible, one of the most unpredictable sports in the world.
