Formula 1 - Why Zanvoort 2025 Was Such A Chaotic Race

English Version - Click to DisplayBeyond Issack Hadjar's success in achieving his first podium finish in F1 and Oscar Piastri's continued dominance in the drivers' championship, the race at Zanvoort was completely chaotic, with more action and mayhem than one would expect on a circuit that appears simple at first glance but is actually one of the most difficult to overtake on, considering its rather old layout. but this race ended up being a real parade of safety cars, crashes, and more chaos on the track. The truth is that from the start, there was a feeling of tension in the air, especially when Verstappen was the only one in the top 10 on the grid with soft tires. What was declining was aggressiveness, a lot of uncertainty about the reliability of the cars and the ability of the drivers to keep a cool head, and that was exactly what was most noticeable throughout the race: several accidents. However, Issack Hadjar shone surprisingly by taking third place, which seemed impossible a few races ago, and Piastri proved to be an unstoppable machine.

English Version - Click to DisplayThe DNF of the two Ferraris was a huge blow to their team in the constructors' championship. Hamilton also went too wide on a corner, which seemed like a fairly normal mistake at first, but when the car hit that slippery paint on the asphalt, it lost all traction, hit the barrier, and was out of the race. After closing the first half with the comment, “I'm useless...,” it was painful to watch him pick up the pieces of the Ferrari. The impact was not as strong compared to other crashes we have seen this season, but the truth is that these cars are designed to disintegrate completely at the slightest contact, which leaves many doubts about Hamilton's future performance and whether he will ever be able to return to being the dominant driver we all knew, or if his performance will only be mediocre and consistent there in the middle of the pack where he is now. On the other hand, Leclerc was performing fairly average during the race, nothing spectacular but nothing bad either, but an unexpected collision with Antonelli left him completely out of the race after a nasty spin that sent him straight into the barrier, exhausting the few options Ferrari had left for this race. On top of that, the questionable strategy they used at the pit stop only made the day worse for Leclerc, when Leclerc practically had to tell them over the radio that the stop was completely unnecessary, something typical that we always see at Ferrari with their contradictory and inconsistent decisions that we have been accustomed to for years.

English Version - Click to DisplayMoving on to Norris, who I really feel sorry for, the poor guy was the victim of pure bad luck and brutal mechanical problems that prevented him from putting up any kind of serious fight with Piastri throughout the race. Norris stayed behind most of the time, handling all the pressure perfectly. You could clearly see the difference between Piastri's super calm and calculated driving versus the constant bad luck Norris has been having lately. Personally, I suspect that spending so much time running behind Piastri generated too much turbulence and hot air, which probably affected Norris's engine quite a bit, especially considering that in the end it turned out to be a serious problem with the Mercedes-built power unit, which shouldn't fail like that out of the blue. Mercedes engines are quite reliable and rarely have problems. Throughout the race, I didn't hear the commentators mention any obvious temperature problems with Norris's car, but he stuck to Piastri like glue for a long time, and that constant turbulence plus the hot air coming out of the car in front of him could definitely have contributed to the engine failure that took him out of the race just when he needed it most. Usually before Imola, many teams tend to change their power units because of how demanding Imola is in terms of speed and temperature. At least he will be fresh with a new unit, but if I'm not mistaken, he will take a five-place penalty for the new unit.

English Version - Click to DisplayOverall, the entire race at Zandvoort was utter chaos from start to finish, with some truly electrifying moments, the first of which came from Verstappen when he almost lost control by taking a huge risk on the third corner during the first lap. but in his statements he indicated that he was trying to get the most grip out of the soft tires, but there was a lot of sand on the track and he couldn't. There were those super frustrating moments that made you want to turn off the TV, between safety cars that came out constantly after the halfway point of the race, silly crashes that could have been avoided, and weird strategies that made no logical sense. There's no denying that the current level of competition is extremely high among almost all the drivers in the top 10. I mean, Albon gained five positions at the start, which is crazy, but it's also obvious that luck counts for much more than it should in this sport and that several really talented drivers need to find that mental and technical stability to be able to seriously fight for positions without making silly mistakes. The reality is that races like this show us how unpredictable Formula 1 can be when several negative factors come together at the same time, from mechanical failures to questionable team decisions and mistakes by drivers who don't normally make them.

English Version - Click to DisplayBut in the end, it became completely clear that Issack Hadjar could really be a tremendous revelation for the future of Red Bull, who have said they will announce their drivers for 2026 after the Mexican Grand Prix. It is already known that Verstappen will remain their main driver, but it seems that with this announcement, Tsunoda only has five races to prove that he can raise his level. At this point in the championship, he needs decisive action, which would be to score points and stay ahead of the two drivers from the Jr Red Bull Racing (VCARB) team. Ferrari remains stuck in its darkest moment in recent years, unable to get out of the hole. Hamilton is completely lost, not knowing what to do to return to his previous level. He is not even the Hamilton who drove for Mercedes last season. Since joining Ferrari, he has been in a constant decline. After chaotic races like this one, Norris's championship aspirations are looking quite difficult. Zandvoort was pure adrenaline mixed with constant drama, but it also left a certain sadness for all that could have been and was not for some teams and drivers who deserved much better luck than they had that day.
